Instagram Another Flawless Pic, Please

Are you having the best summer ever? Do you want to be able to have bragging rights for the rest of the year? Are you trying to make someone jealous?

Well, everyone knows that the best way to make people jealous is to take amazing photos (especially the Instas). There is something about putting something into a photograph that makes it even better and makes everyone else feel inadequate.

As you might know, it is July. The weather is hot, and the Instas are even hotter. What you might not know is that The Hoya is giving you the opportunity you need to brag all summer long.

“Share Your Summer” is our summer photography contest that runs from July 1 to Sept. 2. Students are allowed to submit 2 photos a week to [email protected]. Each week, The Hoya compiles all submissions into a photo album and, from those, the best photo is placed on our Instagram account.

At a loss for ideas? Here are some 4E suggestions:

1. Send in a picture of a random person off the street. The people will be all, “OMG, who is that, what is going on?” Best way to get people talking. Plus, who cares about scenery when you have some rando person to admire.

2. Send in a picture of you on your couch. Let’s be honest, many of us are spending ungodly amount of times lounging this summer. Why not share your beautiful view of your TV and snacks with the world?

tumblr_mejnl0uTaQ1qj13p7o1_500

3. Send in the same photo over and over again. Hey, after a while we are bound to choose it, right? Maybe after the 10th Capitol Building photo we will finally see your photo’s incredible beauty.

4. Send in a photo of your lunch. What premade meal are we eating at our desks today? Or, maybe you are making bank and go out for food. Nonetheless, we wanna see your #food instas more than a pretty European skyline.

5. Send in a selfie. Extra points if you are complaining about the heat, the Metro or boredom. Double extra points if it is a Snapchat.

Think you have better photos? Think you are worthy of the fame? Send your photos to [email protected] as .jpegs with your name, school and year, title, caption and Instagram handle.

A Summer in the District

summerdc

I have only been in D.C. for the summer for less than a week. Practically no time at all. Less than a week, and I have already encountered a ton of changes in Georgetown during the semester and Georgetown during the summer months. How does one place change so drastically in so little time?!

My Observations:

1. Campus is not the center of everything. This is the first time living off-campus during my time at Georgetown, so campus has obviously played a big part in my day-to-day routine. Now I’m living on Prospect St. and I haven’t even stepped within a block radius of campus!

2. D.C. is hot as hell. Oh hawt damn, D.C. is ridiculously warm. I have heard a ton of rumors of this heat, but experiencing it is a whole other thing. I have never craved iced coffee or froyo more in my life.

giphy

3.  Living in a townhouse is the best type of living. Okay, Georgetown’s dorms are okay, but they are nothing compared to the townhouses in the neighborhood. Sure I am paying a hella lot of money per month, but it is so worth it. I actually feel like a real person, wut?

4. People in the District are beyond fit. Or at least they are really good at pretending to be fit. Everyone walks around with a yoga mat (not judging) and the people at Washington Sports Club seem so into it. Perhaps this will inspire me? (Note: Perhaps does not promise anything.)

5. I love this place even more than I thought I did. With school being non-existent I have had more time to enjoy this place we Hoyas call home. Georgetown has so much to offer and I cannot wait to explore it all. Ugh, I love this place.

Apply to be a Summer Columnist

summer

From reflecting on experiences abroad, to analyzing academic issues, to examining science fiction novels, our summer columnists had a lot to share last year. Here is a sample of what Hoyas were writing about over the summer:

Ready for Rio, Allie Hillsbery
https://www.thehoya.com/from-tourist-to-native-in-rio/
“I’ve reached the point where I’ve stopped speaking English in grocery stores. I realized early on that eating lunch at restaurants every day was not going to work out, so now every other day I stop at the mercado for a small supply of fresh sandwich rolls. However, two times since my arrival, I have flown into a mild panic when other shoppers stopped me to ask questions in rapid-fire, heavily colloquial, to-me-incomprehensible Portuguese.”

An American Hoya in Japan, Celeste Chisholm
https://www.thehoya.com/finding-myself-where-i-couldnt-pretend-i-was-anything-else/
“Lately I notice that people here cannot help but notice me. Admittedly, there is no reason to blame them for their riveted gaze, as I fall far from the natural deviation of the average Japanese citizen, being naturally blonde, obviously American, and above all 5’11”. Out here, there is no escape from the fact that I differ in ways beyond mere physiology. Although at first a jarring sensation, living in an environment which so blatantly indicates my disparity has come to be somewhat liberating.”

Hoya Sapiens, Paul Healy
https://www.thehoya.com/reconsidering-the-humanities-crisis-part-i
“Over the past year, the humanities have come under close scrutiny in our public discourse. Last summer, Harvard release a report that showed a decline in enrollment in humanities majors. In January, President Obama took a shot at art history majors in a speech on education and the job market. All the while, voices in the national media have both questioned the value of the humanities and lamented their decline. First, what do we mean when we talk about the humanities? And what sort of crisis is happening?”

Back to Futures Past, Hannah Kaufman
https://www.thehoya.com/23002511/
“As I was reading ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,’ a weird fictional book, ‘Encyclopedia Galactica,’ kept popping up in my mind. Intrigued, I decided to do a random Google search to see what would turn up. Lo and behold, I discovered that this fictional book actually originated from another fictional sci-fi series that began with the novel ‘Foundation.'”

What do you want to speak up about this summer?

Applications to be an online summer columnist for The Hoya are due Thursday at midnight. Visit https://www.thehoya.com/join-the-hoya to apply!

Summertime and Everything is Free

free

Thank John Carroll that it is finally summer. It is time to relax and say helloooo to summer.

giphy

While this relaxation is perfect right now, we will soon have to face the revelation that summer means jobs. We all might wanna spend our time exploring and living easy, but exploring costs money that we just don’t have. Why do all fun things need to cost money?!

Well, thankfully this summer, they do not have to. Recently, there has been an explosion of Facebook events advertising free events in major U.S. cities! Supposedly these events will contain updated lists of activities that you can participate in, free of charge.

As of now these events exist for cities like:

D.C.

and a bunch of international cities as well!

Bring on the adventures and the #free things. And remember, the silent disco in Dupont is only a few weeks away!

A Guide to DC Happy Hours

2012-09-17-image04Finished with finals and ready to get your drink on? Not finished with finals but ready to procrastinate with some cocktails? Happy hours are the best, but it can be difficult to know where to go for all the best deals. If you’re looking to get out of Georgetown for the afternoon, here are some great happy hour deals around DC.

1. El Centro (1218 Wisconsin Ave): Ok, so this one is a little close to home, but its happy hour menu is a hidden gem here in Georgetown. From 4-7pm you can get $5 Margaritas and free salsa lessons. The trick is, the more margaritas you have, the better your salsa dancing becomes.

dancing

2. Grillfish (1200 New Hampshire Ave): I love to knock back cocktails as much as the next girl, but sometimes you just need really good food on a happy hour menu. If you want to try something a little more sophisticated than the classic nachos and wings, head over to Grillfist for $1.50 oysters (only $1 on Wednesdays and Fridays). You can even get fish tacos for $3 ($2 on Monday). Plus, their beers are relatively cheap ($6 and under). So if you want some good beer and fancy food, head over to Grillfish.

3. District Commons (2200 Washington Cir): Yes, this is a GW bar, but they also have some fantastic happy hour deals. If you’re willing to shlep it down to Foggy Bottom you can enjoy specialty cocktails and draft beers for only $5 from 4-6pm and 10pm-close. Better yet, some of their signature appetizers are only $5 too!

gourmet

 4. The Pig (1320 14th St NW): I realize that some of our readers might not be interested in the sugary cocktails and are looking for something a little stronger. If you’re a fan of dark liquor then you should head on over to The Pig from 4-7pm for bourbon happy hour. You can also get a crap ton of bacon… and who doesn’t love that?

bacon

5. Vinoteca (1940 11th St NW): If you’re looking for a classy happy hour that is a bit more lively, head over to U street for Vinoteca’s happy hour, every day from 5-7pm. Not only are there $5 glasses of wine and draft beers, you can also play bocce while you drink! Why, you might ask? The answer is why not!? So if you want to look like a swanky adult for the night, without going over your $15 dollar budget, this is the place for you.

DC has some of the best happy hours around. While these are 5 fabulous options, be sure to check out all DC has to offer (especially if you’re around this summer). While going to Tombs every night is fun, sometimes its important to GTFO and search for new venues. Remember, you must be at least 21 to hit up these alcoholic deals and please drink responsibly. No one likes a Sloppy Sally during adult happy hours.

Friday Fixat10ns: Georgetown Day

Georgetown_Day

As today marks the one week mark til our favorite holiday, GEORGETOWN DAY, 4E has crafted the ultimate pump up playlist.

Play it while you study, while you drink or maybe even on actual Georgetown Day! The limits are endless.

1.Uptown Funk- Mark Ronson (feat Bruno Mars). While this song is annoyingly popular, there is no better song to start of the day!

2. Four Five Seconds- Rihanna, Kanye West, Paul McCartney. Three of the best artists, one song…. how could you get any better?

3. Love Me Like You Do- Ellie Goulding. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!

4. Geronimo- Sheppard. This is personally my goto workout song, but it also is the most epic pregame to anything.

5. Summer- Calvin Harris. Cause it’s almost summer and there is nothing better!

6. Shut Up and Dance- Walk the Moon. Could be renamed shut up and rage with 4E.

7. Ghost- Ella Henderson. We keep, going to the lawn to rage. And we can’t contain how excited we are.

8. Santeria- Sublime. This song just reminds me of driving around, with the top down and my hair all in the wind (name that movie).

9. I Love It- Icona Pop (feat Charli XCX). This song sums up Georgetown Day freshman year and just brings back all the memories.

10. Wagon Wheel- Old Crow Medicine Show. Is there any other way to end a playlist, party or study sesh?!

Winter Survival Guide

wintersurvivalguide

If you somehow didn’t notice the white stuff that have been falling from the sky recently or the freezing cold temperatures, let this article assure you it is in fact winter at Georgetown.

georgetown

So before you start filling out your transfer application to Berkley or University of Miami here are some tips to help you survive the cold.

1. Before going outside, dress in every single item of clothing in your closet. You may at first feel stupid, but you will be warm.

2. Cold toilet seat? No problem, just sacrifice a few socks to create this masterpiece.

toilet-seat-heater-socks

3. Invest in a sleeping bag suit. It may seem like an impulsive buy, but also quite possibly the warmest thing you will ever own.

enhanced-buzz-24882-1275025670-27

4. Trick yourself into thinking that you are in a tropical location instead of this polar vortex by decorating your room with things that remind you of summer.

5. Avoid ice at all costs. It may seem like a good idea at the time to try and slide across the ice like a cool kid, but you will most likely end up falling.

If you even find yourself feeling down about the weather here in DC, just remember that there are places that have it much, much worse.

No one wants to live in that.

Friday Fixat10ns: Summer Throwbacks

summerthrowbacks

[8tracks width=”300″ height=”250″ playops=”” url=”https://8tracks.com/mixes/5810030″]

With the weather hitting sub-zero temperatures, there is no better time to think of the beach and all the heat we could be enjoying. Spring break is only a few weeks away!

1. “Under the Boardwalk” – The Drifters

This classic hit embodies the naivety that we all feel in the summertime. Don’t you just wanna chill under the boardwalk?

2. “Toes” – Zac Brown Band

This song combines two of my favorite things: summer and the Spanish language. I do not understand why “adios y vaya con Dios” makes me dream of the beach, but I don’t hate it! Vamos a la playa.

3. “Summer of ’69” – Bryan Adams

I cannot listen to this song without having it stuck in my head for at least a day. If I were alive, I bet ’69 would have been the best summer of my life, too.

4. “Brown Eyed Girl” – Van Morrison

God sometimes I wish I had brown eyes just so I could pretend this song is about me. You might be thinking, why is this summer themed? But, doesn’t the bouncy tempo and “sha la la”s just make you feel so happy and carefree?

5. “Island in the Sun” – Weezer

When you’re on a holiday, this is the best song. For sure. This song just explains how good a vacation really feels.

6. “Here Comes the Sun” – The Beatles

This song is so innocent and heartfelt. It is the perfect song to remind you that even though winter is horrible right now, in the end it will get better and be summer. We are almost there.

7. “If You Like Pina Coladas” – Jimmy Buffett

Okay I am a little biased because my family loves Jimmy Buffett, but this song always helps me get through the winter months. But since I do like pina coladas, I always start craving them when I hear the song.

8. “Margaritaville” – Jimmy Buffett

Wasting away in heaven with this song. The mix of chill and catchy is unbeatable, this might be my ultimate feel good summer jam.

9. “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” – The Beach Boys

This song always makes me think of 50 First Dates, AKA one of the best love stories of all time. Wouldn’t it be nice if it were warm, sunny and we were all on the beach having a really really good time?

10. “Soak Up the Sun” – Sheryl Crow

“It’s not having what you want, it’s wanting what you got” are some of the realest words that have ever been spoken. There is no better song to inspire you look on the bright side and soak up what you got.

We are kinda almost there Hoyas. Enjoy this time and get ready for some sunny beach weather in a few months!

Just a Hoya and her Bonna-crew

hoyadoesbonnarooLast weekend, a group of friends and I road tripped to Manchester, Tennessee, a small town of about 10,000 people, which, for four days every June, swells to a population ten times that as people from around the country flood the town for the annual music and arts festival, Bonnaroo. It is a difficult setting to describe. When I told people that I was going to spend four days in the Tennessee heat, sleeping in a tent with no toilet and $7 showers, they scoffed at me more often than not. Yet as nightmarish as it sounds (and at some points it was just that – let’s just say I never want to see a port-a-potty ever again), my time was also filled with remarkable and warm strangers, exceptional music, unforgettable performances and even better friends.

When my Bonna-crew and I arrived on Wednesday afternoon, we were directed to our camping spot by volunteers, and I felt a little like I was back at NSO, being shepherded by smiling and dancing volunteers, who cheered at me while I attempted to navigate the new world I had just entered. The 700-acre farm on which Bonnaroo is held was a veritable maze of tents, vendors and stages. Of course stage names such as “What Stage” and “Which Stage” didn’t help as I tried to coordinate with my friends at “This Tent” and not “That Tent” or “the Other Tent.”

Nonetheless, everyone was plainly excited to be there, and that energy never seemed to subside. Everywhere we went I was greeted with “Happy Bonnaroo” and a high five. I swear I have never given more high fives in one weekend since I was seven and still playing soccer. Tom Brady should come to Bonnaroo next year and I promise even he won’t be left hanging.

WelltodoContentHorseshoecrab

In between shows, we scavenged for shade to sit and watch the throngs of people. The weekend included Friday the 13th and there were costumes abound, and Bonnaroovians certainly did not forget their national pride on Flag Day (although whether everyone was aware that it was Flag Day I’m not too sure). We also got to know our neighbors in the campgrounds, who included a expert group attending Bonnaroo for the fifth year and whose camping space would befit Khaleesi herself. On our other side was a dude who lived with his parents and saved up his money every year in order to show off his skill with those LED fingertip gloves at music festivals (I’m not kidding). I even ran into some Syracuse fans who recognized my Georgetown shirt and had some choice words concerning our upcoming 2015-2016 encounter. I responded appropriately.

With five stages playing from around noon to 4 a.m., it was impossible to see everything that I would have liked to. However, some of my personal highlights included:

  • Dr. Dog An eclectic group of just genuinely talented musicians, check them out.
  • Disclosure If you haven’t already, go listen to their album Settle beginning to end.
  • Vampire Weekend Two words – Ezra. Koenig.
  • Flaming Lips There were huge dancing rainbows and mushrooms… ’nuff said.
  • Arctic Monkeys Currently one of my favorite bands and I was only three rows away from the front!
  • And of course the one-and-only Elton John He closed the festival on Sunday night and played for a full two hours, yet somehow he seemed to never run out of classic songs.
