Best Bets: Study Style

Well, Hoyas, we have good news and bad news. The good news is classes are done. The bad news is that finals haven’t even begun. That means that it’s time for papers, coffee, studying, (raging?), Lau, Lau, and more Lau. If you happen to surface out of your reading hole and into the real world in the coming days, here are some of our Best Bets for the weekend, study style.

Saturday:
If you have a free moment (read: free afternoon), mosey on down to Washington Harbour (a.k.a. the Georgetown waterfront) and spend some time at the brand new 11,800 square foot ice-skating rink. For $9 entry and a $5 skate rental, you’ll get bang for your buck at the rink—did we mention it’s bigger than the one in Rockefeller Center? Skate your way to happiness, kids.

Free at night? Don’t forget to stop by the Gonda Theater in the Davis Performing Arts Center to catch the final performance of A Civil War Christmas. It’s wintertime fun without even having to step foot off campus. Only $8 for students.

Sunday:
Didn’t see the Christmas tree lighting in Dahlgren Quad? Excited about Christmas trees in general? Stop by the Prez Rez at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and check out The White House Christmas Tree, a 40-foot Colorado blue spruce that has made D.C. its home since 1978. Also be sure to check out the nearby Pathway of Peace,” 56 smaller, decorated trees representing all 50 states, five territories, and the District of Columbia. Traveling to see these trees will definitely “spruce” up your study days. “Fir” sure. It’ll be “tree-ific.”

Sorry not sorry about the tree jokes. We hope to see you out in the coming days. If not, we’ll see you at Lau. Sadly.

An Open Letter to Mark Zuckerberg

Dear Mark Zuckerberg,

When you were sitting in your dorm room at Harvard, writing out math calculations on a really cool glass whiteboard that I’m sure you didn’t actually own, (thank you David Fincher for allowing me to once again lose myself in the world of hyperreality) I don’t think you foresaw what exactly your little creation would do to the rest of us.

What I currently need to be doing is drowning myself in population means and Max Weber; instead, I’m rating the girls in my ex’s most recent tagged photos and gagging at the impressive number of chins I have in the pictures my friend added from this weekend. I should mention that I just do not have the time or energy to go through pictures 1-460. Whoops. That just happened.

What’s worse is that I am so uninterested by the prospect of finals that I’m procrastinating by writing an inbox to my mother. In fact, it’s a haiku about how I shouldn’t be doing what I’m doing. The least you could have done was use that extremely large and competent brain of yours to predict that this would be a problem for easily distracted college students like myself and create some sort of application that would remove your dumb site from our computer’s knowledge. I don’t always have the self-control to turn on Self Control.

I’ve sunk so low that my new hobby is poking people with whom I share a very distant and barely friendly relationship. This is fairly amusing and I can objectively (though, really, it is completely subjective) laugh at the awkwardness I know they feel.

In conclusion, I am mad at you.

Please, Mark, change your ways. (Or at least take my Probability & Statistics final for me? Thanks.)

Surviving Midterms

Midterms. One word that hardly anyone ever wants to hear. It’s hard to believe that we’ve already made it halfway through the semester. Now that the excitement of Homecoming is over and the adjusting weeks have passed, it’s time to get back into the swing of, well, academic things.

But before we all start to panic with one glance at our jammed-packed calendars, let’s try to de-stress and prepare for the upcoming weeks. Here are some simple tips to help you stay on top of your game and to avoid over-stressing:

1. Relax. Yes, I know. Easier said than done. But think about it…will one test truly define your life? Though all the hours at Lau and the good amount of Flex Dollars spent at Midnight Mug will help your cause, sometimes its good to just sit back and take a deep breathe.

2. Take breaks. It’s impossible to study for too long. Go for a run to the monuments, watch that episode of Modern Family that you missed, eat dinner at Leo’s with some friends — anything that can get your mind off your work for at least a half hour. Sometimes taking the time to not study is just as important.

3. Make plans. It’s easy to get caught up in all of the midterm craziness but think about it. Midnight Madness is coming up, Parent’s Weekend, basketball season (!!) By taking the time to think about all the good, exciting things to come, the motivation to focus and get through the week will be even greater.

4. Keep working on your fitness. Exercise can be very beneficial, especially during midterms. By running on the treadmill, sweating it out in a spin class, or even just taking a brisk walk down M Street, you will feel more energized and ready to do your work.

5. Stay organized. Create a schedule for yourself so that you don’t fall behind and/or freak out! Keep that planner up to date and decide what days/times are best to complete your work. By budgeting your time effectively, you will be able to better monitor your stress.

6. Naps on Naps on Naps. A 20 minute nap is actually the best thing you can do for your body. If you find yourself being pushed into that all nighter, set your alarm and take a quick power nap. It will re-energize you and also keep you from pulling your hair out at 4 am. Be careful, though. Any more time than 20 minutes is not good and can actually make you even more exhausted.

7. Reward yourself. You’ve made it! Treat yourself generously after midterms are finally over. I’m going to suggest taking the walk to M for some Pinkberry. You deserve it.
