Let’s Get Physical: 4E’s Fitness Tips

feel the burnAfter a month of rain, clouds and general finals’ season gloominess, May has finally come to an end. I don’t know about you, but the last two weeks of school seemed particularly brutal this year. One anonymous junior reported that she “ordered a Buffalo Chicken Sandwich from The Tombs three days in a row to Lau,” while another anonymous source revealed to The Fourth Edition that she “stressed baked two trays of gluten-free brownies and finished both [herself] while stuck in the confines of her Village B apartment”.

But you know what? It happens. People stress eat. Life goes on.

Sadly, it’s now June. Weekend getaways and afternoons spent soaking up the sun after a long day in your cubicle are quickly approaching. But unlike those brownies, those pesky finals-season pounds won’t just disappear. Luckily, The Fourth Edition has some tips for you to gear up for a summer of sunshine and layer-shedding celebrations.

  1. Get out there.
As the the man formerly known as Louis Stevens once said…

Yeah, that’s right. You with the Cheetos dust on the keyboard. I’m talking to you.

The only way to begin making changes in your life is to, well, get started. Hop off the couch and take a walk outside. Just do something!

  2. Make a plan
Set that alarm for 5:45 and make it to spin class. If you’re still in DC, head to the monuments for a sunrise you will Instagram on the spot won’t soon forget. Consider emerging from the great depths of the Metro and walking an extra block, or two, or six. Just make a plan and stick to it.
  3. Find a buddy
Do you have a friend who #FoundHerSoul at SoulCycle? What about a gentle acquaintance who you heard refers to himself as the “Crossfit King”? Latch onto that guy or gal! Many fad fitness classes offer discounted rates for first-timers, and sometimes, seeing how in shape others are is just the motivation you need to better yourself.
And if there are simply no golden retrievers in your circle of friends, grab your fellow roly-poly pug out of bed and start YouTubing at-home exercise routines. I’ve heard The Pussycat Dolls Workout works wonders…
  4. Don’t overdo it
As a gentle warning from us at 4E, we’d like to remind you that you are by no means in the same shape you were in during, let’s say, high school. Your legs will not forgive you if you subject them to a five-mile run on your first day hitting the pavement.

Sorry, only Ali can take this title. May he rest in peace!

Relax! Ease yourself back into a routine. The only thing rushing you is the waning summer sun. And if all else fails…

  5. Improvise Be that guy at the office with the yoga ball-desk chair. Go ahead. Own it. You’re on your way to becoming a better “you”.

Who Wore it Better: 4E or Dogs? (Halloween Edition)

dogs

Don’t you hate it when somebody steals your look, and that person is a dog. Check out these dogs who had the same costumes as 4E bloggers when they dressed up many Halloweens ago. Who knows, maybe these comparisons could inspire some looks this Halloweekend.

Polling has been disabled because we didn’t want to stress anyone out with this difficult decision. And we know, we were cute.

Who wore it better: Courtney Klein or this dog?

Phys 102 Study Guide

Science-Mathematics-Physics-Illustration-via-Shutterstock-615x345So it looks like 4E’s getting into the study guide business! As a student currently in PHYS 102, I wouldn’t call myself the best source of physics knowledge. But I’m definitely probably not the worst! Since the test was this morning, you already know that you missed a lot of information. Here is what you should have studied, instead of the textbook.

1. Light is crazy: If you’re like me, you’ve only ever quantified light as: “Too Dim, Can’t Read Funny/Annoying Buzzfeed Listicle”, “A Little Too Bright aka Reading Phone at Night” and “OH GOD THE SUN IS KILLING ME #hungover.” But no! Light can do a lot more than burn your retina when you space out and accidentally stare at the sun! For the final, you had to know about reflection, refraction, diffraction… It’s good times. Just don’t take light for granted.

2. Carbon Dating…?: I’m sure you’ve heard the old joke: “How did Spiderman meet his girlfriend? RADIOACTIVE DATING!” But the mathematical process behind carbon dating is no joke. It combines multiple concepts so it’s basically catnip for professors trying to make a nice, integrated final exam.

3. Are You Rad?: If you didn’t go to the last class, NEVER FEAR! Here’s a super-quick rundown of what we went over. (But seriously, if you missed out, go get someone’s notes, I’m pretty sure it was important.) 1 RAD * RBE = 1 REM. 1 GRAY * RBE = 1 SIEVERT. For photos, RBE = 1; electrons, RBE = 2; alpha particles, RBE = 20. Let’s hope you commited that ish to memory or at least slapped it on your equation sheet.

4. The Text Is Not the Last Word: Seriously, I think we can all agree that while in many respects the textbook is a great resource, in other respects it sucks. But there are other great resources! Check out this Youtube series on diffraction. Or this diagram about the powers of radiation. Or this cute pic of a dog, just because.

Anyway, HOPE YOU DID WELL TODAY FOLKS! (Remember, the final was today, Friday, at 9:00 am, in either REI 103 or REI 112. In case you forgot. No judgment here.)

PUPPY BOWL!

puppies

Today is Uber’s “Puppy Bowl” celebration. This means that they are delivering puppies straight to your office until 3:00 pm! For only $30 you get 15 minutes of puppy playtime.

cutepuppy

All profits are directly donated to the participating animal society; for us, that’s the Washington Area Rescue League.

The best part: all the puppies can be adopted. Most Georgetown students can’t really keep a dog on campus (I know, we’ve all thought about it), but today might be the day you can convince a professor, recent graduate or family friend to adopt a fuzzy playmate. Plus, if you live off-campus, no one will ever know about your extra roommate.

If you still use antiquated taxicab services because you’re old, lame and living under a rock, you can use special promo code PUPPYBOWL2015 to get $20 off your first Uber ride.

So quick: download Uber, use promo code DCpuppies and make a new friend!

The Best Thing to Happen on Super Bowl Sunday (Other Than the Super Bowl)

Puppy Bowl 2014Chips? Check. Five large pepperoni pizzas? Check. A friend to help you finish them? Check. Now what? The worst part about Super Bowl Sunday is all of the hours before the Super Bowl when you have nothing to do. Everybody knows there’s no point in expending energy or doing anything but sitting on the couch watching the game.

At least that used to be the case, until some genius in a fancy apartment in Manhattan invented the Puppy Bowl. You heard me: It’s like if football and puppies mixed and the result was a lot of puppies running around being adorable. And there’s even a kitten halftime show, featuring a particularly bold kitten parachuting into the stadium. Think it can’t get any better? How about the fact that, aside from a few (hopefully) animal-trained humans, the referees are largely penguins standing next to large blocks of ice. I honestly couldn’t make this up even if I wanted to.

You might be asking why such greatness exists on Earth right about now. The Puppy Bowl is staged to raise awareness for pet adoption, and all featured puppies and kittens (60 and 30, respectively) are up for adoption! If you like what you see, make a call and you could have a Puppy Bowl champ to love. This year’s lineup is expected to be the most talented bunch yet. Without further ado, here are our top four picks for the 10th annual Puppy Bowl, airing Feb. 2 at 3 p.m. on Animal Planet. Be there or it will be your biggest regret of 2014.

american-eskimo-puppies brody

Name: Brody
Breed: American Eskimo Dog

brittany-spaniel-puppies-560x403 laney

Name: Laney
Breed: Brittany Spaniel Mix
Age: 13 weeks
Why we pick her: Her back leg is ready to pounce. This girl’s got game and she isn’t afraid to show it. Better watch out, pups.

basset-hound-560x340 lily

Name: Lily
Breed: Basset Hound
Age: 13 weeks
Why we pick her: Her eyes are so full of wisdom. She’s also got the largest ears of the bunch, so she is always in the know.

puppy-bowl-2014 abdiel

Name: Abdiel
Breed: Labrador/Terrier Mix
Age: 13 weeks
Why we pick him: He’s got his game face on. Always.

Why You Really Wanted to Join 4E for Christmas…

apply to write for 4eChristmas has come and gone. While the presents and food were fantastic, we know that for you there was still something missing underneath the tree. At one point, we were all there, too. We all shared that feeling of emptiness, that feeling of having one secret, lurking, unfulfilled Christmas wish. And, lucky for you, we know exactly what that wish is: You want to join 4E, don’t you?

Lucky for you, ’tis the season for new hires! All Georgetown students dream of being a part of 4E. (At least they should.) The Hoya is a pervasive part of the Georgetown community, and 4E is one of the most dynamic and exciting sections (sorry, not sorry, other Hoya members, I’m biased). Although applications don’t emerge until January, it is never too early to think about the endless possibilities that could present themselves if you join our intellectual (and attractive) staff!

Still not convinced? Check out the list below to find out why joining 4E is the gift that you didn’t receive (but still can get) for Christmas:

1. Don’t you wanna be like us? We are hip, we are cool and we surf the web. We’re also obsessed with the latest fads. Gifs? We love them. Quirky news? We’re your source. Creative approaches to journalism? We’re all about dat lyfe. Wisey’s sandwiches? Can’t get enough. We want to be website that you and your friends scroll through during theology class … and to keep the addictive pieces coming, we need your help!

2. Best friends 4E is a really, really, really good time. Our bloggers are super close friends, and the majority of our meetings end in uncontrollable laughter. It is comical how comical we are, and we’re always looking for eager minds to join the fun along with us.

best-friends.jpg

3. F is for FUN Writing for 4E is a party. It doesn’t even feel like work. (There are deadlines, though, and we still carry the integrity and professionalism of The Hoya brand.) That being said, our section is always relaxed, creative and cool. Part of what makes blogging so exciting is the freedom to write about what we like and the ability to think of post ideas ourselves. You like politics? Write about it! Are you a fashion fanatic? Show off your style! Have a unique idea that Georgetowners would love? Share it – and share it with us! At 4E, we encourage one another to be ourselves and come up with our own innovative content.

4. NAPS 4E is a major proponent of napping. If we had our say, napping would be a national sport. Do you have what it takes to join our team? Sleep all day, blog all night. Nap in the middle of writing a blog post (as long as you make deadline). You’ll dream of sugar plums and sparkling blog content!

5. Storytelling The 4E loves to do staff collaborations. We all take turns adding our own personal touches and end up with a fabulous product. What parts will you bring to our story? Are you our action hero? Our science junkie? The average guy (who happens to love current events)? We want you to add your special spin to our 4E narrative.

6. Newsies Not everything is gifs and glitter. 4E also likes to write about serious items. When writing companion pieces with The Hoya, we put our own spin on interesting and relevant content. Informative, outside-the-box and funny … 4E is such a triple threat.

7. TV-aholics TV and Netflix are important parts of the 4E sphere of influence. (I can personally attest to my own Netflix addiction.) What better reason to procrastinate studying than watching TV for a blog post you’re required to write? Television shows may take over our lives at times, but they provide us bloggers with plenty to talk/write about. And if they’re watched in the name of putting out new content, then it’s a sacrifice we’re willing to make.

8. PUPPIES We love our mascots more than anything. Join 4E to look at and write about this adorable face. You know you want to …

IMG_3329… and how can you say no to that?

9. Snack and Play Every week, we name a Blogger of the Week who goes above and beyond with his or her work. This blogger is awarded with food, cupcakes, milkshakes, coffee and/or other amazing prizes. In fact, the bloggers are currently in the midst of a friendly post battle for a delicious Tombs dinner! Some of us even take our work to the big leagues and compete for The Hoya’s coveted Staffer of the Week prize. At 4E, your hard work gets rewarded. (And most of the time, it doesn’t even feel like work.)

10. Fixat10n Nation Music makes us lose control. Misdemeanor’s in the house! Ciara’s in the house! I’ve got a cute face, chubby waste … ahem. What I, uh, meant to say was that our Friday Fixat10ns playlists incorporate blogging expertise with some pretty amazing tunes. Bonus: The playlists are also themed. So if you like music, you should probably join 4E.

There are still a million other reasons why being on 4E is totally the Christmas gift you never got … but still can get. The only way you can truly find out why 4E is so awesome is to apply and experience it for yourself. Applications are coming soon, so in the meantime, ask questions to any of our writers or email us at [email protected] to learn more about the 4E life.

The bottom line: APPLY TO THE BLOG. (And tell your friends to apply, too!) We would love to have you, as long as you think we are really pretty.Mean-Girls-GIF-Regina-George-Rachel-McAdams-You-Think-Youre-Really-Pretty

So you agree? You think 4E is really pretty?
