The Scoop: GUPD Catches Suspect & Uses Instagram

paul_blart_mall_copHi Hoyas! With all of this ~criminal activity~ on campus lately, 4E wants to do their part to keep fellow Hoyas and members of our community as safe as can be with a PSA: GUPD has an Instagram account!!!

As you may have seen, at approximately 7:42 p.m. last Friday, our very own chief of police, Jay Gruber, notified us that the suspect in an armed robbery that occurred on campus Wednesday night had been identified and arrested in the Leavey Center. With the help of a student report, they were able to pull this off. But, with the help of Instagram, they were able to notify students much earlier!

(Evidence: This screenshot was taken at least 2 hours before any official notice was reported to students.)

Now as weird and perhaps even sketchy? as all of this was, we here at 4E would like to commend GUPD for reaching students where they are: Instagram.

Side note: Students were also on campus during this time, so maybe there could be another small protocol way of telling us when armed criminals are roaming our buildings… just a thought.

Anyway, they’ll get there! Let’s keep showing GUPD our support with a little Insta-love.

Their ratio right now is alright, but you know if this were your account you’d be telling yourself do better.

They also post cool bike pics like this. Plus if @thegeorgetownchimes likes their stuff, shouldn’t you?

Props to them on their charity work! Really impressive!!

Yet another side note: Still wondering if they have an update on my stolen bike from the first week of fall semester…

Sometimes they even pose with students! Bucket list fall 2015: get in a @gu_pd Insta!

Anyway, GUPD keep doing you and doing safety, we really appreciate it! Students, be sure to follow this account. You don’t want any FOMO about, you know, actual real world safety issues right outside our doors!

Rhino Temporarily Closes

rhinosclosed

Popular M Street spot Rhino Bar and Pumphouse will be closed through the weekend, leaving thirsty Hoyas looking for another place to spend their late nights.

After a February sting in which police officers found two underage girls with fake IDs and an underaged Georgetown student drinking a Bud Light inside the bar, the D.C. Alcoholic Beverage Control Board forced the temporary closure. In addition to being shuttered through this Saturday, July 12, the bar will have to pay a fine of $3,000.

In the end, I don’t know what’s more surprising: that they only found two people with fakes at the bar or that they found a Georgetown student drinking something as highfalutin’ as Bud instead of Burnett’s or Natty.

Anyway, I’m sure Rhino says sorry for not serving their delectable hot wings for a few days. And while these next five days might be difficult for some of the more dedicated Rhino-goers among us, we believe in you. To help, we compiled some options for how to cope with your loss:

1. Find another Georgetown bar to call home.

From Old Glory and Rí Rá to El Centro and Gypsy Sally’s, there are plenty of other places close to campus where you can get your drink on. And while they might not have the familiar atmosphere or abundance of Georgetown students, you might be surprised and find a new Georgetown favorite.

2. Use the opportunity to explore bars around D.C.

OK, so your favorite Georgetown bar is out for the count — at least this weekend — but there are hundreds of cool bars around the District. Take the chance to get familiar with a few of these options.

3. Hang out with underage people.

I’m actually pretty OK with Rhino being closed for the next few days because, as an underaged Hoya without a fake (you’re welcome, Mom), it means that more of you will be forced to hang out with me. So take advantage of the closure and do just that.

Together, we can get through the next four days without Rhino. Stay strong, Hoyas.

The Return of drunkengeorgetownstudents.com

There’s evidence of the longstanding battle between Georgetown students and our disgruntled neighbors all over the place – lawn signs and pins reading “Our Homes Not GU’s Dorms”, angry listserv posts about sunbathing students, you name it. Now one of our more outspoken Burleith neighbors has resurrected his blog, “Drunken” Georgetown Students (quotation marks are his, not ours).

Featuring shaky videos of student parties with commentary like “No Snap… no Rocky? What gives?” and “Pigs in a Poke”, drunkengeorgetownstudents.com is run by Stephen R. Brown, a Burleith resident and former American University professor.

Seniors may remember the site from our freshman year, when Brown started taking pictures of parties on his block, and encouraging his fellow Burleith and West Georgetown residents to do the same. He once suggested a photo contest where one of the categories could be “urination” (sounds fun!).

The server hosting the original Drunken Georgetown Students took the site offline because Brown was posting photos of students without their permission, a violation of their Terms of Service. He started things up again on the current version of the site.

Brown wrapped up posting in May 2010, with a goodbye note to the graduating class. But now he’s back, and better than ever. He started things back up this spring with some snarky commentary about the effectiveness of SNAPS, and over the summer and fall has been posting videos of the parties on his block.

After the jump, check out one of his videos, and a few excerpts from the site.
