An Oscars Recap

Sunday was the 91st Academy Awards and the first hostless show since since 1989. You probably already knew that because it is indeed midterm season and therefore the perfect time to deep-dive into someone else’s drama.

After opening with a performance by Queen and that guy who almost won American Idol Adam Lambert, the Academy brought out two of Hollywood’s best award show hosts: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. They were joined by fellow all-star comedian Maya Rudolph and wasted no time reminding us that they, unfortunately, were not hosting.

Please host next year. Love, everyone.

Here are some highlights from Sunday’s festivities:

Melissa McCarthy and Brian Tyree Henry fully committed to announcing Best Costume Design by wearing looks inspired by some of this years films: The Favourite, Mary Queen of Scots, Mary Poppins, and, I think, Black Panther.

Some Dip Ball gown inspiration.

Samuel L. Jackson won the award for Best Biased Presenter.

This was him when Green Book won Best Original Screenplay:

And then this was him giving Spike Lee the Best Hug and the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for BlacKkKlansman.

José Andrés, everyone’s favorite D.C. restaurateur, introduced the movie Roma.

Andrés, right, with actor Diego Luna.

Two of our favorite Hoyas graced the stage Sunday:

John Mulaney presented the awards for Best Short Films (Live Action and Animation) with Akwafina.

“Still can’t believe we beat Nova.”

And Bradley Cooper performed a little-known song called “Shallow” with Lady Gaga. Now, if I learned anything from A Star is Born and the Oscars its that Jackson Bradley and Ally Lady Gaga are truly in love. Look at them. There was no acting Sunday night:

Here’s Bradley singing to Miss Gaga:

And here is Miss Gaga returning the favor:

“ohhhhaaaahhhaawwhhhaaahhAHHHAWHHHAAAHHHHHHHHHH” basically

Are we sure that this isn’t part of a follow-up film called “True Love Is Born: How Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga Found Love Making A Star is Born 2018?”

Someone please let me know.

Rami Malek won Best Actor for his role as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. Olivia Colman won Best Actress for her role as Queen Anne in The Favourite. Most people expected Glenn Close to take home the top prize for The Wife, including Olivia Colman. That made for an excellent speech by the shocked Olivia Colman.

If you haven’t watched the speech yet, I suggest you do, and then watch her speeches from the Golden Globes and The BAFTA Awards. Maybe people voted for her not just because of her wonderful performance as Queen Anne, but also so she could give another incredible acceptance speech.

Last, and definitely most shocking, win of the night was Green Book taking home Best Picture.

The film and its creators have been the subject of a few controversies, leading many to believe that the film was not going to take home the top prize.

Anyway, if you are disappointed about any of the results from Sunday night or are looking for something to get you through the last few days before spring break, may I suggest returning to the best performance of the year:

Oscars Drinking Game

Get out your champagne flutes and call your limo driver!

It’s red carpet season, and the greatest awards show of all is TONIGHT: The Oscars.

Even if you’re having trouble locating your Cartier earrings and haute couture ballgown, don’t stress. Get yourself to a TV, pop that bubbly, and get ready to judge the rich and famous as if you didn’t wear sweats to class on a daily basis.

If you are over the age of 21 and read Daily Mail updates as soon as you get up in the morning, this drinking game is for you. If you’re not into showbiz, this will help you become an interesting/worthwhile person to hang out with.

Without further ado…

Take a shot every time:

There’s an awkward break in the program because they couldn’t get it together and find an inoffensive host. Why’d you have to go and be homophobic like that, Kevin??

Someone’s heartfelt acceptance speech is played off.

I’d like to thank my mom for giving birth to me so that I could write this article.

There’s a Trump joke but it really just isn’t even funny anymore. :/

Rami Malek has a wide-eyed look on his face that makes you want to cuddle him and ask, “Baby are you okay???”

Take 2 shots every time:

You see a celeb with a whole new face. Renée Zellweger  is that a mask, sweetie?

Someone does the “Wakanda Forever” salute.

A winner doesn’t show up to grab their statue because they’re just TOO GOOD. My money’s on Kendrick — the man has a Pulitzer and simply does not need a little golden naked man on his shelf.

Your fave gets absolutely ROBBED. Glenn Close is cute and all, but if Gaga doesn’t get that gold, I’m gonna take to the streets. Sorry, not sorry.

Finish your drink when:

Lady Gaga repeats her now-iconic line: “There can be 100 people in a room, and 99 don’t believe in you, but just ONE…”

BUT I ALWAYS BELIEVED IN YOU, GAGA.

You spot a Hoya! #Hoyas4BCoop #ButtChug4BCoop #WhoSaidThat

You make it through the entire show!! You are a star and you deserve your own award!!

Stay fabulous, my friends. Perhaps we, too, can be as hot and cool as Bradley Cooper someday.

Overheard at Leo’s Night on The Hilltop

Banner - Leo 1789In case you live under a rock (or maybe just gave up Snapchat for a short while), tonight, Leonardo DiCaprio dined at famed Georgetown “You-Will-Only-Go-Here-With-Your-Parents” eatery, 1789. Naturally, a crowd of one hundred hopeful Hoyas scrambled from their indented Lau chairs (thanks, midterms) to catch a glimpse of the Oscar winning nominated actor with just a bit of chocolate tart crumb on his cheek.

Here’s what your fellow Hoyas were saying at the scene.

“This is worse than waiting for my SAT scores.”

“I bet he’s eating with Bradley Cooper and DeGioia.”

“It’s midterm week. Leo, this is inconsiderate.”

“1789 isn’t even that great… like not even top five meals of my life.”

“Do you think GUPD will be called for back up?”

*Clarification: By 8:59 PM, in a turn of events no one saw coming, GUPD was, in fact, called for back up.

“Someone’s totally getting fired for this.”

“If it’s between a hoe and me seeing Leo, hoe is getting stomped.”

And when it was all over and 1789 security asked the onlookers to leave, this final plea was uttered:

“Swear to me, swear on Martin Scorcese, SWEAR ON ~TITANIC~ THAT HE’S GONE.”

There are some things that you just don’t want to believe.

The sad truth was, Leo had exited through a side door, and had been spotted by just a few saavy students. 4E is here to bring you the exclusive pics below:

Be back soon, Leo! And best of luck at the Oscars!

It’s an Honor to be Nominated, But We Only Care Who Wins

best picture smackdownI’m sure like all ardent Oscar fans, you’ve see all of the movies nominated for Best Picture. Okay maybe half of them. A few? Two? All right, you saw one with your family over winter break because they made you and that’s it. It’s okay, here at 4E we understand your busy schedule. Even though you haven’t watched all the movies, you still want to know who’s going to win right? So here is a brief pro/con list of all the movies’ chances of winning written by yet another uniformed Oscar watcher.

American Hustle

Is that the one with all of Amy Adams’ cleavage? Yes, yes it is.

Pros: America is a pretty cool country; hustling takes a lot of effort, Amy Adams looks good in low-cut dresses and don’t they go into the Hunger Games arena for awhile? No? Oh well, at least Katniss is in it.

Cons: Bradley Cooper has weirdly curly hair in this film and doesn’t even take his shirt off! Pass.

The Wolf of Wall Street

The one with Leo, aka Jack Dawson, aka perfection.

Pros: Leonardo DiCaprio, Leonardo DiCaprio’s smile, Leo’s hair, Leo’s voice, his eyes … Hang on, is anyone else in this movie?

Cons: Oh right, Matthew McConaughey is in this movie, but only for like 2 minutes, and that’s the best part!

Gravity

Hope you like the sound of Sandra Bullock breathing.

Pros: Space is cool, you don’t weigh anything in space, you can do endless somersaults in space, and let’s not forget George Clooney is in space with you.

Cons: Space is a lot of dark emptiness, and it’s actually really terrifying if you think about it for too long.

Her

Hang on a second, does he fall in love with a computer? What?

Pros: Siri is pretty sexy. Technology is good and who doesn’t like girls? It is called Her after all.

Cons: I’m still confused; are you sure he loves this computer? Really? Well it is the voice of Scarlett Johansson, but still.

Nebraska

Home, home on the range … Where the deer and the antelope play …

Pros: Nebraska is a solid state, lots of wide-open spaces and all that. Plus the movie is about the lottery, right?

Cons: Who are we kidding? There is nothing to do in Nebraska.

Captain Phillips

Tom Hanks in the middle of the ocean. … Is this the Castaway sequel?!

Pros: It’s a true story, and there are bound to be some serious sea life sightings.

Cons: It’s a true story, and there is a 50 percent chance it’s a horror film.

Philomena

Accent alert!

Pros: They are all British! And you know the British are good at portraying heartwarming stories.

Cons: Is Philomena someone’s name? I hope there’s filo dough.

Dallas Buyers Club

Matthew McConaughey is actually in this one!

Pros: Cowboys are sexy. Jennifer Garner is sexy.

Cons: They gave poor Matthew a mustache… Sigh.

12 Years a Slave

There are a lot of true stories this year!

Pros: Lupita Nyong’o. This is another profoundly heartwarming tale, and they sneak Brad Pitt in there! Also Lupita Nyong’o.

Cons: It’s set in the Antebellum South, so everyone’s clothes are funny, and there are lots of tall hats. (Whether this is a pro or con is debatable).

That’s basically all you need to know about this year’s nominees. So get ready for the Oscars this weekend, and may the best movie win!

Bradley Cooper Was (Possibly) Here

Bradley-Cooper-1920x1200Of the many Georgetown traditions held dear in Hoyas’ hearts, 4E has a special love for the partaking in the “I Found Bradley Cooper And Took a Picture With (Of) Him” game. A combination of a simple bird watching hike and the Hunger Games, the quest to find and photograph demands dedication, bravery and sharp eyes. Every time our lovable, Oscar-nominated alumnus shows his heart-melting smile on campus, the Georgetown community goes into a rabid frenzy, and here at 4E we do our best to steer the frantic masses with live updates of sightings. In honor of the fearless Bradley stalkers who so generously share their pictures and current locations despite risk to life and limb, we present the 4E Bradley Spotting Hall of Fame, complete with survivor testimony:

Billy and Bradley“I always take pictures with people who beat me in basketball, and when everyone started liking this one I figured it must be someone important. Turns out it was Matt Damon!”  – W. S. Millerbrad2

“Eighth time down M Street in search of Brad and what to my tired eyes should appear? There he was all along, looking so perfect it was as if he were photoshopped.”  – J. Walshhealy“It was a beautiful, sunny day. I walked onto campus and there he was! Bradley Cooper before my eyes! I quickly snapped a photo of him, and it turned out so well!” – S. W. Quad
Bradley1“It happened just like I had always dreamed it would: Out of the middle of a crowd, his piercing blue eyes met mine and that radiant smile made me feel larger than life.” – L. O’Donovan

2009 Armed Forces Inaugural Committee

“I was at the inauguration and there he was. I couldn’t see President Obama but I could see Bradley’s sparkling white teeth and mystical gaze!” – Joe B. Carroll

“I was texting on the way to class and glanced up and saw that god of a man emerging from Leavey. Tried to sprint to him but a horde of freshmen trampled me. … I still got the picture though.” – S. Henleson Photo Feb 25, 9 11 41 PM “Saw some black cars outside Healy and remembered that Brad drove a black car in Limitless, so I’m pretty sure thats him in the second one. The windows are pretty tinted but if you squint you can see his flowing golden locks.” – V. C. Westfield

Keep your eyes peeled and cameras poised, fellow Cooper aficionados, and don’t hesitate to let us know when you next spot our elusive star (or someone in a baseball cap and glasses who vaguely resembles him). You never know when he’ll appear on campus!

Bradley and Oscar: A Match Made in Heaven?

OscarBradley Cooper has already been getting a lot of love here on 4E this week, but now he’s getting some from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Today, the Academy announced that Cooper was an Oscar nominee in the category of Best Supporting Actor!

Cooper (COL ’97) was nominated for his role in American Hustle, a film loosely based on an FBI investigation in the 1970s. This is his second straight year in which he is up for an Oscar; last year, he was nominated in the Best Actor category for his work in Silver Linings Playbook alongside actress Jennifer Lawrence. (Cooper will be working with Lawrence again in the upcoming film, Serena, directed by Susanne Bier.)

Other 2014 Best Supporting Actor nominees include Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips), Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street), Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) and Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave).

Best of luck, Bradley!
