Bill Clinton: A True Hoya

As you may have heard, Georgetown’s very own prodigal son is returning home to the Hilltop this week. And as cynical as we usually are here at 4E, this is actually a pretty cool thing. After all, since the events of the past year have forced us to acknowledge that Eric Trump, Steve Bannon, and Paul Manafort are technically alumni, we need to celebrate the Hoyas who didn’t collude with Russia have made a positive impact in the world now more than ever.

But as you prepare to camp outside Gaston to hear his speech, many of you who were born in the late-90s may be asking yourselves, “Who is Bill Clinton?” We know from eavesdropping on Blue and Gray tours that he certainly attended Georgetown, but is he really a Hoya? If he were a student today, would he regularly attend Jersey Night? Would he mourn the loss of Quick Pita? Would he post in the meme group? And more importantly, would his memes be dank?  To try to answer some of these pressing questions, we here at 4E briefly skimmed carefully read and took diligent notes on Bill Clinton’s autobiography, My Life, and came to the following conclusion:

Bill Clinton is a true Hoya.

Take a look at our reasoning below:

1. He Loves Wisey’s

The Quote: “At Wisemiller’s Deli, just across Thirty-sixth Street from the Walsh building where I had most of my classes, I got coffee and two donuts for twenty cents every morning

Our Analysis: Like all good Hoyas, Bill Clinton both loves Wisey’s and eats there way too much. He definitely would have voted for the Hot Chick/Chicken Madness ticket back in the infamous GUSA election of 2016, and is surely a strong supporter of our unofficial school mascot, The Wisey’s Rat™. So the next time you feel guilty about eating Wisey’s cookies for breakfast as you walk in 15 minutes late to your class on the fourth floor of Walsh because the elevator was taking forever, just remember that you will probably grow up to be the President of the United States.

When you call your order in and the wait is only 10 minutes

2. He Never Leaves Campus

The Quote:In my first two years, I rarely ventured beyond the confines of the University and its immediate surroundings”

Our Analysis: For a true Hoya, Burleith is as exotic as it gets. Yes, just like a vast majority of Hoyas, Bill Clinton fell victim to the Georgetown Bubble. And yes, we know D.C. is a world-class city full of renowned food, art, and culture, but the whole Metro system is confusing and not a lot of places take GoCard. True Hoyas stick to complaining about the lack of options at Leo’s and only venture beyond M street once a semester for Instagram-related purposes. Also “immediate surroundings” is definitely code for Chi Di. We’ll see you there on Thursday, Bill. Hopefully you have a good ID though, they’ve been pretty tough this year.

When someone suggests you should “explore D.C. more”

3. He Embraces Our “Sleep When You’re Dead” Culture

The Quote: “My most memorable class sophomore year was Professor Walter Giles’s U.S. Constitution and Government… By the time I got to his class I had embraced my lifelong affinity for sleep deprivation and had developed the sometimes embarrassing habit of falling asleep for five or ten minutes of class”

Our Analysis: Same, Bill Clinton. Same. Does it even qualify as a Georgetown class if more than half its students are awake at any given time? Whether it’s in a lecture hall, on Healy Lawn, or in the middle of a professor’s office hours (it happened once), falling asleep at inappropriate times is what we Hoyas do best. Honestly, Bill Clinton, props for doing this well in an era before you could try to stay awake by scrolling through memes on Facebook while the professor thinks you’re taking notes. Side note to any of my professors who accidentally clicked on this article: I love your class! Keep up the good work!

When the professor makes eye contact during the lecture and you have to act like you’re deep in thought over whatever they just said

4. He Has a Capitol Hill Internship

The Quote: On interning for Arkansas Senator William Fulbright, “It was easy to fit the job into my daily schedule, partly because in junior year only five courses were required instead of six, partly because some classes started as early as 7 a.m.”

Our Analysis: If you hadn’t already guessed, Bill Clinton was in the SFS. This quote confirms it. I can practically hear this quote telling me he’s a STIA major and that he has to go study for MAP. Even today, when Bill Clinton meets new people, I guarantee you that he finds some way to mention the SFS. This guy is a Hoya.

When it’s been five minutes and no one has asked about your foreign service background yet

5. He Loves The Tombs

The Quote:My favorite haunts in Georgetown were the Tombs, a beer hall in a cellar beneath the 1789 restaurant, where most of the students went for beer and burgers

Our Analysis: Bill Clinton’s Tombs Night was definitely lit. But not too lit, like where you had to call GERMS and the whole night was ruined. It was just the right level of lit, like where everybody danced to “In Da Club” by 50 Cent when the clock hit midnight, and then Bill Clinton got a great Instagram pic of his forehead being stamped by the Tombs bouncer. Every Hoya since John Carrol has made some of their greatest memories at the Tombs. Need we say more?

Actual photo of Bill Clinton getting his forehead stamped on his Tombs Night. On an unrelated note, yes, I am available for freelance photoshop jobs. Serious inquiries only.

So there you have it: Bill Clinton is a Georgetown Hoya. Our diligent research has definitively proved it. We hope you all have fun accidentally falling asleep learning a lot at his speech on Monday- and huge props to the team over at #GUPolitics for making this happen! No disrespect to the time you got Martin O’Malley to play his guitar in McShain Lounge, but this is definitely much cooler than that.

Friday Fixat10ns: Holiday Sing-A-Longs

holiday sing a longBecause finals are starting, everyone at 4E knows that it’s hard to get into the holiday spirit. But there’s no better way to get excited than to play some holiday music, finish that paper that you know is last minute, and cram for that bio exam that you’ve got tomorrow morning. Here’s what you should definitely have on that playlist right now.

  1. “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” by Pentatonix

The holiday season wouldn’t be the holiday season without some form of The Nutcracker playing in the background. This new version will honestly keep you guessing.

2. “Mistletoe” by Justin Bieber

Let’s face it. We all loved JB when this song came out and we love JB now. This is too full circle not to include.

3. “All I Want for Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey

The classic Mariah Carey song. Use this to inspire you to make your life as iconic as Mariah has made this song.

4. “Baby It’s Cold Outside” by Idina Menzel and Michael Bublé

I’m not cruel enough to include any Frozen song on this list, but Idina Menzel’s voice is too amazing to pass up. Also, another iconic holiday song, it’s too relatable when the temperatures drop on campus to below 30 degrees.

5. “Jingle Bell Rock” by Bobby Helms

Who knows when you’re going to listen to this song, but if you know the Mean Girls dance to this song, you should definitely perform it on Lau 2 as a study break.

6. “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)” by Nat King Cole

Hands down one of the best song to get you in the holiday spirit. Works every time.

7. “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” by Michael Bublé

It wouldn’t be a holiday playlist without Michael Bublé. It just wouldn’t.

8. “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow” by Dean Martin

The more you play this, the more likely it is that it will actually snow. The snow day calculator told me so.

9. “Hallelujah” by the Pentatonix

Yes, this is the second song I’ve included from their album but honestly listen to the whole thing because it’s beautiful.

10. “Feliz Navidad” by Jose Feliciano

The best pump up holiday song. Fast paced, easy to sing along to, and just in general a holiday anthem. Get ready to belt it out.

Finally, happy holidays from everyone at 4E! And good luck on finals!

4E Brings you a Close Read of ‘Closer’

Banner - CloserHey, I was doing just fine until…. the lyrics of Closer became permanently embedded in my ear drums. At any given point, the Chainsmokers’ chart-topping hit is playing somewhere on the Georgetown campus and can be avoided only by boycotting Snapchat stories (in which someone is inevitably videoing himself or herself singing along) and other cautionary actions short of putting in earplugs and hiding in your dorm room.

I would like to raise some concerns about the art form that is Closer by the Chainsmokers ft. Halsey:

  1. The song frequently ambiguously refers to a “rover.” Are we talking about a Range Rover? A Land Rover? A Mars Exploration Rover? Presumably the latter, but it’s unclear.
  1. The verse:            “So baby pull me closer in the backseat of your Rover

That I know you can’t afford

Bite that tattoo on your shoulder

Pull the sheets right off the corner

Of the mattress that you stole

From your roommate back in Boulder

We ain’t ever getting older”

…is first sung by Andrew Taggert and then repeated by Halsey, presenting a few problems. Do both protagonists own Rovers? This is economically improbable, especially taking into consideration that they both are frequenting hotel bars (Are they presumably cheap?), though both reference the other not being able to afford said Rover. I think the takeaway here is that both of our protagonists are financially irresponsible.

Do they both have tattoos on their shoulders? The listener should consider that they possibly got these tattoos together. Maybe this is what initiated “four years, no call,” because they look something like this:

  1. Why and how is there a mattress in the backseat of the Rover? The standard size of a twin XL mattress (popular in the esteemed college dormitory design community) is 39 x 80 inches. A Range Rover back seat (many thanks to the Vehicle Specification page of landroverusa.com) is 50.8 inches wide with 70.1 inches of floor space. In conclusion, a mattress would not fit in this space, unless the back seats were folded down, which would still result in minimal room for activities that result in pulling the sheets off the corner of this mattress.

Lastly, the music video must be addressed. What happened here?! The music video is horrible. There is no correspondence to the beat or the storyline of the song. We get two people who are clearly well acquainted (what happened to “four years, no call”?) frolicking on a beach (they are supposed to be in a city…). There are no hotel bars, no ROVERS, and no stolen mattresses. Taking all aforementioned inconsistencies into account, for all we know, these people are getting older.

Disclaimer: I am still obsessed with this song. It has taken up permanent residence at the top of my “Going Out (to study, of course)” playlist.

Farewell Fourth Edition Seniors!

Banner - Bye Seniors

Co-authored by Mike Radice and Meg Lizza

This year, 4E lost nine fantastic seniors to a terrible phenomenon called “graduation“. We are very sorry to see them go, but will forever remember them for their contributions to the 4E family. Check out their stories and some of our favorite articles of theirs:

Courtney Klein (AKA Coco): The original Blog Queen, Courtney was the 4E Senior Editor from Spring 2015 through Fall 2015, and later served as a Contributing Editor. Our resident internet-breaker, Courtney first broke the internet with her awesome Georgetown pickup lines, and later rejection lines, and just when you thought it was over, breakup lines. When she isn’t perfecting her Instagrams of DC, she’s probably doing what really matters: rating DC’s Bagels or predicting what Burnett’s flavor represents you.

Under Courtney’s reign, 4E greatly expanded its visibility. She helped spread truly #breaking news, like snapchat updates and national guacamole day. Courtney will forever be our Dear Leader, and we will miss her devotions to guacamole and The Swug Life.

Karl “KP” Pielmeier (Our Founding Father): KP served as our Senior Editor from Fall 2013 through Spring 2014, and later as a Contributing Editor. Imparting his wisdom on everything from Burnett’s to the crazed pumpkin spice phenomenon, KP and his expert knowledge on all things gastronomic will surely be missed. When he wasn’t crafting the perfect salad at Hilltoss or honoring some of our best staffers at The Hoya with his Staffer of the Week posts, KP was probably reigniting the infamous 4E GroupMe (you wish you could be a part of it).

Under his reign, 4E took on a more generally light-hearted tone, but that didn’t deter KP from writing about serious and important issues that can happen at Georgetown. We will undoubtedly miss his devotion to all things RumChata and his highly anticipated drinking games.

Emily Min (Campus News Expert): Emily was 4E’s Senior Editor from Fall 2014 through Spring 2015. Out and about, Emily always had the inside scoop on big things happening at Georgetown. She broke the important news about the JesRes renovation and the missing clock hands. The first to tell us about the spring concert guest and bubble tea at Georgetown, Emily played an important role in keeping us on top of the Georgetown trends.

Her wisdom expanded beyond 4E, and she helped our readers prepare for important life traditions, like trick-or-treating on Embassy Row. We never want to see her go, but its time to #breakup.

Max Wheeler (Blogger by day, DJ by night): Max thrived as the Blog’s resident ‘Manly Monday’ expert, providing Hoyas with a fresh male take on all things deemed ‘basic’ and ‘womanly.’ It was Max who broke the news to Georgetowners everywhere that listening to Justin Bieber’s most recent album ‘Purpose‘ would, in fact, be a good use of time.  When he wasn’t perusing the iTunes Top 100 Albums chart, Max spent his time hosting his own successful radio show, and entertaining listeners everywhere with a live Snapchat stream of the underpinnings of the show, including, but not limited to, countless videos of him lip-syncing Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” into the radio mic.

At 4E, Max was known as the Music Man, as he reviewed, revered, and even wrote music of his own. Do you need a playlist to snuggle to? How about some inspirational tracks to get you through finals season? Max had you covered, and we at 4E will miss him and his jazzy demeanor immensely.

Matt Sullivan (Social Media King, #Slay): The man, the myth, the blog legend. Matt had the incredible ability to write about anything and everything, and irrespective of what he produced, his articles would go viral. He kept us informed on what goes on in Lau and had visions of true artistry on our campus. Matt also provided 4E readers with awesome advice, like how to find love at Georgetown and what’s appropriate to wear at FoxFields.

With Matt’s contributions, 4E was able to drastically increase its social media presence, making us the most widely read online publication at Georgetown. Lastly, Matt could make the seemingly impossible look easy, like he did in his article about O’Donovan’s 2.0.

Sydney Bolling (Our Very Own ‘Jane Hoya’): Probably cheering on her Hoyas at the Verizon Center, Sydney helped us get through this stunning 2016 election cycle. At 4E, she wrote a great variety of posts: from the uplifting articles that helped us determine which Good Stuff concoction we are, to the relatable articles about internship fails and preregistration fails.

Sydney gives some of the best advice, too. Whether its about what you should and should not do in the GAAP group, or even what DC Happy Hours have to offer, we always trusted her judgment. We hope to cross paths again with her, but we know that October 3rd is probably not the best day to do that.

Keaton O’Neil (Quiz Queen): When Keaton wasn’t crafting your coffee at Saxby’s, she was probably pondering what would become some of 4E’s most popular quizzes, like one that would help you determine how romantic you are and another that tested your knowledge of Georgetown’s course offerings. She even made one of the most difficult quizzes to ever come off the 4E presses: Would You Rather?: Georgetown Edition. In fact, Keaton’s quizzes were so popular, they even made unannounced guest appearances on some other Georgetown publication’s website (smh)!

Keaton truly mastered the art of the quiz and helped make 4E a more fun and exciting publication. We will miss her eye for the future and know that she will seize all of the world’s many opportunities (especially those at Trader Joe’s).

Lindsay Lee (GroupMe Creator and Blog OG): Lindsay was 4E’s Senior Editor from Spring 2013 through Fall 2014. Even though Lindsay Lee left us for bigger and better things, we can never forget our original 4E ‘First Lady’. Publishing a hundred articles, it’s almost too hard to pick her best posts. A true blog bae and Georgetown Hoya, Lindsay anticipated Georgetown Day in proper fashion with her “Twas the Night Before Georgetown Day”, an article that never goes out of 4E style. She also hyped up the annual Mr. Georgetown competition in 2013 with her “Meet the Contestants” article (it literally broke all 4E records for most views).

Lindsay wrote about what really matters to our fellow Hoyas, like her helpful guides on alternatives to Tuscany (RIP) and reusing your empty kegs. Our 4E OG put a lot of work into this beloved publication and we will always be forever thankful for that!

Alexis Oni-Eseleh (Beyoncé Extraordinaire): Joining 4E as a sophomore, Alexis got right down to the issues with her blog posts. From her “Open Letter to GUSA Campaigns” to her “GUSA Video Takeover”, Alexis helped 4E capture the latest on school happenings.

While reporting on the #important stuff, Alexis also just had to include posts about Queen Bey, like her “Six Degrees of Beyoncé: Dip Ball Edition” and her “Flawless? Your Saturday Morning Story” articles. Thank you for reminding us that “I woke up like this” applies to all of us!

Last but not least, we will miss their debauchery.

You will always have a place in our hearts and in the GroupMe.

Brb #crying

Friday Fixat10ns: Songs To Nap To This Weekend

Friday Fixat10ns

Having one of those weeks where all you want to do is take a nap? Well, you are in luck because here at 4E we have come up with the perfect soundtrack to listen to (or sleep to) while you catch up on those Zzs. If you fall asleep before this playlist ends, we did our job.

[8tracks url=”[8tracks width=”300″ height=”250″ playops=”” url=”https://8tracks.com/mixes/7858234″]

  1.  “In Your Atmosphere” – John Mayer: Didn’t get that dream internship in L.A.? Neither did John Mayer it seems. Let the soothing sounds of John Mayer sing you to sleep as you contemplate the fear of living at home for yet another summer with your family.
  2. “Like Real People Do”- Hozier: Learn to nap like real people do with awesome sound tracks like this one. Listening to Hozier’s mellow sound will send you into a hypnotizing sleep, the kind of 8 hours a night sleep that “real people” are supposed to get.
  3. “Landslide”- Fleetwood Mac: Georgetown is stressful, with so many clubs, classes and other activities, it can seem like a landslide of work is constantly pilling up. Listen to this song to get away from your worries, if only for an afternoon nap.
  4. Stop this Train”- John Mayer: Yet another shining example of why I consider John Mayer to be the mayor (haha get it) of nap time. Drift off to sleep while contemplating growing old and all the stress that comes with it.
  5. “Clean”- Taylor Swift: This song may be inspired by Taylor’s breakup with One Directioner Harry Styles, but it can also be applied to your soon-to-be breakup with your high GPA. Listening to this song will give you a sense of peace and make you feel “clean” inside and out.
  6. “I Want to Write You a Song”- One Direction: Speaking of Harry Styles, here is a super cute 1D song that is perfect for dozing off. Bonus points if you end up dreaming about writing a song with 1D.
  7. “Cherry Wine”- Hozier: What could be better than wine and napping? That’s right, listening to this Hozier song about wine while napping. If you listen closely, it almost sounds like Hozier himself is getting a little sleepy just singing.
  8. “Hate to See Your Heart Break”- Hayley & Joy Williams:  Your heart will break if you don’t listen to this one. It has some low notes and some high points, but most importantly it will rock you to sleep like the lullaby you wish your mom could have sung to you.
  9. “Autumn Leaves”-Ed Sheeran: Yes, I know, it is technically spring right now, but it has been so cold lately that it is practically autumn again. This Ed Sheeran bonus track might be one of my favorite nappy time songs, it is just so sweet and sleepy.
  10. “I’ll Be Good”- Jaymes Young: Ah yes, what I tell myself every Friday night. I’ll be good this weekend, I’ll wake up before 11, I’ll do my homework, I’ll work out. Instead of actually doing any of those thing, just listen to this song and you will be filled with a sense that you actually did something good.

Well, there you have it! 4E’s perfect playlist to nap to this weekend! So don’t start working on all of those huge final research papers, take a nap instead.
