Staffer of the Week: Sheena Karkal

Once a week, The Hoya recognizes a staffer that has done a particularly awesome job — now you can get to know about them, too. As part of our Leavey 421 series, we’ll be posting quick interviews with each Staffer of the Week. This week’s title went to someone who “guided” things along “B”-eautifully: Sheena Karkal!

Name Sheena Karkal
School College
Year 2015
Major Biology of Global Health, Government
Hometown Orlando, Florida
Positions on the Hoya Guide editor

Why did you earn staffer of the week?
I earned staffer of the week for my work on the Guide and the Game Issue in the B-section on Friday. Ian “Autumn Goose” Tice (senior layout editor) and I got to create a novel layout and design for the Guide cover to go along with the feature on Hurricane Sandy. The second half of the B-section, the Game Issue, was a collection of fun challenges and quizzes. It was something we had never done before, so it was fun to be able to experiment freely.

What’s your favorite part about working for The Hoya?
The comfort in knowing I’m not alone in my weirdness. Also, the sweatshirts. If we can continue to make a new version each semester, I can practically have one for every day of the week!

What is your favorite Halloween movie and why?
Hocus Pocus, because it’s so delightfully terrible (and ridiculously 90’s).

If you had to make a playlist of only three songs, what are they and why?
It would really have to depend on my mood, but I do like playlists with some contrast. So I picked three which each match a different vibe from some of my favorite artists:
Fat-Bottomed Girls by Queen
These Streets by Bastille
Separator by Radiohead

How do you feel about midterms right now?
A little overwhelmed since they’re never-ending. But I’m coping pretty well.

Congratulations, Sheena and keep up the good work!

The 12 of ’12

Welcome back to campus, my fellow Hoyas! It is the new year, which means Yates is going to be filled to the brim by the usual “exercise-more-regularly-as-my-new-year’s-resolution” people (don’t worry, they’ll all be gone in a week or two), we brace ourselves for the inevitable baby boom that will occur on 9/21 and we all struggle to remember to write 2013 instead of 2012 on top of our papers. We at The Fourth Edition wanted to take a moment to remember some of the key moments at Georgetown in 2012, which was a monumental year in more ways than one. They say a picture says a 1,000 words — and I’m too lazy to write more than five sentences — so here you have it: 12 photos from The Hoya that sum up the not-so-apocalyptic year of 2012. Enjoy and Happy New Year!

Sunday Night Wrapup: We Survived Hurricane Sandy!

Well folks, it’s safe to say that this week has been a doozy. We’ve seen two days off from classes, Halloween Weekend Round 2, some of the biggest names in a capella all under one roof… and most importantly, we’re still alive to talk about it. In case you were living under a rock this week, here’s everything you need to know to get you up to speed:

Hurricane Sandy ravaged the east coast early this week, leaving 8 million without power as a result of destructive wind, torrential rain, and heavy snow. Damage was especially prevalent in New Jersey and New York, where swells reached a record 32.5 feet in New York City. Damage is estimated at $50 billion, and you can click here for more information on relief efforts and how you can help.

Halloween is finally over! [Insert sigh of relief.] After two weekends of costumes, candy, and themed parties, it’s time to finally start preparing for Thanksgiving! Aside from the ubiquitous cat and uniformed Catholic schoolgirl, here are this year’s top costumes: Heroes, Zombies, Honey Boo Boo, Big Bird, The 1%, and Mitt Romney’s Binders of Women!

DCAF, or the DC A Capella Festival for those of you who haven’t heard, came to town this weekend, bringing in some of the most amazing harmonies since Beyoncé and the gang were at it in 2000. If you couldn’t make it this week, don’t fret. DCAF will be at it again next weekend, so keep calm, get your tickets here, and prepare for your ears to find Jesus.

Last but not least, the 2012 Elections are coming down to the final stretch. You might feel like this girl, or you might be as happy as this baby, but either way, Tuesday is coming and it’s kind of a huge deal.

Hopefully you got your extra hour of sleep, Hoyas, because it’s been big week. And from the looks of it, it’s only going to get bigger!

The Five People You’ll Meet During Hurricane Sandy

Sandy, you’re the one that we want. Well… at least until the wind, rain and chill sets in… We’re all mutually soaking in the joy at not having classes, but Hurricane Sandy changes people. So here is a little guide for the five people you will meet during Hurricane Sandy.

1. The Paranoid One If you were to walk into this person’s dorm room you’d probably find 2-3 flashlights, complete with enough extra batteries to power all the clocks in the ICC. If you open their fridge you’d find gallons of water (despite the fact that tons of free water is falling from the sky…) They’ve probably built some sort of bomb shelter stocked with Twinkies in case Sandy somehow turns nuclear.

2. The Non-Believer Despite the sheets of rain, aggressive wind and city-wide shut downs, this person refuses to acknowledge that there is a hurricane going on. They continue to go on with their normal schedules and tweet holier-than-thou remarks about how Hurricane Sandy is ‘totally not a big deal’ and how they’re going to go for a jog or run errands on M street casually. Yes, good luck with that.

3. The Partier HURRICANE SANDY RAGERRRRR. Nobody’s mad. Apparently, to this person, when classes are cancelled it means that all obligations and responsibilities are also cancelled. That test that they were supposed to have today? Hah, no longer a concern. HOMEWORK, I VANQUISH THEE.

4. The Scrooge-Professor Some of you may be unlucky enough to encounter one of these. While you’re in the midst of celebrating not having to turn in your work or do the readings, this professor is looking for a way to rain on your hurricane. You will most likely receive an email from them, asking you to e-mail your homework in or complete an extra assignment about that day’s reading. Cue huge groan.

5. You You’re trying to be pumped about the time off but can’t shake the feeling that you really should be writing that history paper you have due Friday. You’re just enjoying the excuse to wear sweatpants everywhere without being judged and trying to recuperate from Halloweekend part I. But hey, this storm wont last forever so if I were you, I’d stop reading this blog post because your teachers are going to go full throttle when classes start again to make up for all this time off. Time to break out the books…or the pumpkin lattes and Netflix, either works.

Surviving Sandy: Food Edition

As Hurricane Sandy descends on the East coast, we’re all making last minute preparations before the storm traps us inside. The worst of the storm is yet to come, so if you still need to grab supplies, now’s the time to do it. Lots of places are running low on bottled water and flashlights, but there’s still some things to be had if you know where to look. Nobody wants to make a long trek just to come face to face with a closed sign, so we put on our journalist pants and found out which places are still open. We’ll be updating this list as we hear updates on business hours. Wisemiller’s – Normal hours: grab a Chicken Madness to tide you over during Hurricane Madness) The Tombs – Kitchen closed at 3 p.m. Corp Services – Closed Quick Pita – Normal hours Wingo’s – Normal hours Eat & Joy – Normal hours Chipotle – Closed Tuscany – Closed Booey’s – Closed Dean & Deluca – Closed Dixie Liquor – Will remain open until 8 p.m.
