Georgetown Meets House of Cards

Frank Underwood 1

We all know that Georgetown students love House of Cards, it is basically our obsession. From binge watching episodes to having heated arguments about plot lines, there is no escaping the importance this show plays for our campus. Sometimes, we even think we are Frank Underwood. It has gotten almost out of hand.

Now, the connection has reached an even higher level. Professor Neal Katyal of Georgetown Law School now has a cameo on the amazing show we know and love.

Professor Katyal plays a Supreme Court advocate in the fourth episode of the show’s third season, on Netflix now! Basically, it is like Georgetown is the new focus of House of Cards.

According to Georgetown Law, Professor Katyal was originally approached to be a consultant for the job due to his knowledge of the Supreme Court and how it functions. However, after the developers of the show realized how convincing he was an actor, they decided to give him a role! He was so good that the crew actually assumed he was an actor.

Professor Katyal says that Georgetown students are very fortunate because they are able to experience the real life drama of Washington, D.C. by attending Georgetown University.

Who knows, maybe the House of Cards staff will hire Georgetown students next! We can dream, can’t we?

Thanks to Georgetown Law for this important information!

President Obama Congratulates Georgetown

Charter Birthday

Today marks the 200th anniversary of Georgetown’s charter, officially incorporating the university into the District of Columbia. Signed by James Madison back in 1815, our current president, Barack Obama, weighed in on the momentous occasion today with a video uploaded onto Youtube.

“As your neighbor, I thought I’d say hello and congratulate you on the 200th anniversary of your charter,” President Obama begins, while then delving into the many varied accomplishments of Hoyas over time, and emphasizing the influence of Georgetown’s Jesuit values in different fields. Basically, the President thinks we’re awesome, thus confirming what we knew all along.

You can watch the full (less than 1 minute-long) video below. It’s totally worth it, especially for the very end. Hearing POTUS say “Hoya Saxa” is truly a transcendent experience that I will totally #humblebrag about in the future.

Other government leaders congratulated Georgetown today too, including Speaker of the House John Boehner, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senator Patrick Leahy.

Oh, and we just heard from Bill Clinton!

Check out the university’s statement (plus all of the congratulatory videos) here. Actually, if you want to check out the charter (it’s short), go for it.

So happy birthday, Georgetown, and Hoya Saxa!

House of Cards: Take 3

House of Cards

Due to our proximity to the White House and abundance of “politically inclined” students, it is no wonder that House of Cards is one of the most popular shows on everyone’s Netflix.

If you are an avid reader of 4E, which obviously you all should be, you would know that we are obsessed with Frank Underwood and everything he does. That is why when the newest season’s trailer come out yesterday during the Golden Globes, we could hardly control our #emotions.

First things first, the drama. It is completely and totally unreal. Power stance anyone?

The mentorship possibilities. Claire is a force to be reckoned with. Werk that pantsuit.

OH, and make sure you don’t miss out on Feb. 27 when this glory finally becomes available on our favorite binge-watching site. Because after all, What Would Frank Underwood Do?

The Ultimate Ben & Jerry’s and Netflix Pairing Menu

Netflix Ice Cream

There are many things that go hand in hand without need for explanation. Football and Thanksgiving, Lau 2 and procrastination, Burnett’s and regrets, winter and leggings, Leo’s and sickness, Rhino and freshmen. But one of the most important of all of these is a good ol’ pint of Ben & Jerry’s and your go-to Netflix show. We at 4E have enough experience to provide you with a proper menu for pairing the perfect flavor with the perfect show.

“House of Cards” and Americone Dream:  What better way to celebrate ‘MERICA and its politically corrupt president in “House of Cards” with a vanilla, caramel, chocolate swirl waffle cone infused pint of B&J. You’ll be scooping mouthfuls of this stuff as you observe Frank mercilessly and oh so cleverly battle his way to the top.

“Gilmore Girls” and Raspberry Chocolate Chunk Froyo:  You may need a little something for comfort as you ceaselessly fret over the future of Lorelai and Luke or Rory’s incessant complaints over her boy troubles. This is where a pint of delicious raspberry froyo sprinkled with chocolate chunks comes into play. Better yet, the fact that it’s froyo and says raspberry on the label makes it healthy enough to fit into the diet you started this morning.

“Weeds” and Half Baked:  With recent legalization laws in place, it’s only fitting that you celebrate with a classic stoner show and some ice cream to help with the munchies. This flavor is not very complicated, but it’s oh so good with its chunks of gooey cookie dough that your pint will be gone in no time.

“Scandal” and Karamal Sutra:  Not only will the title of this ice cream make you feel a little scandalous, but its rich caramel chocolatey core may also get you all hot and bothered. Maybe this is what you need to embrace your inner Olivia Pope and her fierceness. ¡Muy escandalosa!

“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and Hazed and Confused:  What better way to watch the debauchery of these five underachievers with a little, scratch that, a lot of Ben & Jerry’s Hazed and Confused. Like this show, this ice cream combines everything that is good in life into a pint of pure bliss (hazelnut and chocolate). Beware: this show does involve hysterical laughing and tears of happiness, so remember to eat your ice cream in between episodes or during commercials.

D.C. Ranks Highest in the Country in Binge-Watching

bingewatchingFor the sake of journalistic integrity, I have to admit: I am writing this article after having watched eight full episodes of House of Cards within the last 24 hours. Yes, I too am officially a Georgetown student cliche. It’s inevitable. Eventually Frank Underwood gets to all of us. Some may call my recent Netflix marathon an achievement, but my history homework that was due today might disagree. Luckily, I now know that I am not alone.

InTheCapital recently reported that the majority of people living in the United States binge-watch TV shows, and Washington, D.C., is officially the home of the top binge-watchers in the country, with 88 percent of D.C. adults binge-watching TV episodes. (We tied San Francisco and Dallas for first place.) In addition, the study found that 66 percent of D.C. adults prefer to watch current season episodes as opposed to past episodes, once again ranking as the highest in the country. The study defined “binge-watching” as “watching two or more episodes of the same show in one sitting.”

So, what exactly are D.C. adults watching? According to the article, the top eight most binge-watched TV shows are:

  1. Game of Thrones
  2. Sleepy Hollow
  3. The Black List
  4. True Detective
  5. Scandal
  6. The Walking Dead
  7. Being Mary Jane
  8. Homeland

Sad to say, my most recent binge show, House of Cards, failed to make the cut.

5 Reasons Georgetown Students Are Frank Underwood

Frank Underwood 1It’s been two weeks since the second season premiere of “House of Cards” and Hoyas all around campus are finally starting to leave their dorm rooms (read: dark caves) and rejoin society. Since the premiere, it’s been hard to walk around campus without hearing, “Ugh, you’re only on episode 4? I skipped class and now I’m on episode 10.” While conversations of binge-watching and plot twists have filled Leo’s and Lau, there has been one topic that hasn’t been given much attention. After watching Season 2, it has become clear to me that Georgetown students are really Frank Underwood. Here’s how I can tell:

1. You and many of your friends have worked on Capitol Hill. From serving your local Congressman to interning for one of D.C.’s many NGOs, you know the Hill like the back of your hand. If it weren’t for the work you do, would the government be able to function? I don’t think so.

2. You do what it takes to get the job done. For Frank Underwood, that means doing a few questionable acts (cue horrible flashbacks to Season 2, Episode 1), but for you it means watching the sunrise in Regents after you just finished studying for one of your many midterms.

frank

3. The D.C. food scene is a subject that you know WAY too well. A huge part of Season 2 focuses on the number one love in Frank’s life: power Freddy’s. There’s nothing Frank Underwood likes more than having lunch at his favorite underground rib joint. And there’s nothing you like more than finding the new cool place for brunch or that hole-in-the-wall restaurant that no one else knows about.

Freddy's

4. You know how to get to the top of your on-campus commitments. It’s well known that Georgetown students are quite involved and pride themselves on their extracurriculars. Whether on a club sports team or in one of Georgetown’s many student activities, you do what you can to ensure future leadership positions. Just as Frank Underwood is gunning to become the president, you’re working hard to add that coveted leadership position to your resume.

5. Throughout the first two seasons, Frank Underwood often refers to Dupont when talking about where characters live or where he goes to get a drink. That’s basically Georgetown, am I right? Plus, you get your haircut in Dupont or you head there on the weekends to live it up with the yo-pros (‘young professionals’ for the abbreviationally challenged). You might have even run into Frank Underwood and not even known it!

Let’s just call it like it is: You are Frank Underwood. From your stunning work ethic to your knowledge of all things D.C., you may as well be on “House of Cards.” And if you can’t be on the show, you might as well just binge watch it like the rest of us. Seriously, if you haven’t started yet, get on it.

What to Do Feb. 14, As Told by Frank Underwood

house_of_cards2So, what’s happening Feb. 14? If you answered Valentine’s Day, you would be WRONG. The correct answer is: the season two premiere of “House of Cards!” If you’ve been planning that romantic date with someone special, think again. The only thing you should be doing next Friday is taking all those Valentine’s Day treats, snuggling in your bed and getting ready for an epic TV marathon. Still not convinced? Perhaps our friend Frank Underwood can be more persuasive. (And believe me, Frank Underwood can definitely be persuasive.)

If you don’t watch the new season, everyone else will know what happened and you’ll be “in the dark.”

Fu1

Frank Underwood might also take your failure to watch as a personal betrayal, and that would not be good.

FU2

Valentine’s Day is too predictable anyway; make a bold choice instead.

FU3

Don’t think you can watch a full season in one day? You’ve just got to power through.

FU4

Watching 10-plus hours of Netflix in a row is hard; you’ve just got to be a rock. Besides, do you know how many calories the brain burns? Frank Underwood does. Who needs the gym when you have the ability to focus all your brainpower into complicated plot twists, murderous congressmen and ruthless journalists?

That’s right, I’m telling you to blow off your significant other for a night of drama and intrigue, Ben and Jerry’s ice cream and your comfiest pajamas.

FU5

Okay, so maybe don’t lie to your significant other. But, even if you do, it will all be worth it. Cancel those reservations, put on your slippers, grab your laptop and get ready for Frank’s scandalous bid for the White House.

It’s Back…

House of CardsAttention Netflix junkies, Kevin Spacey addicts, political fiends, Georgetown students and all combinations of the aforementioned categories: House of Cards is back … on Feb. 14.

The Netflix political drama will make its anticipated return on none other than Valentine’s Day. (Nothing says “I love you” more than sleazy wheeling and dealing from our favorite majority whip, am I right?)

Though the series is months away, you can still watch this delicious promo video of Robin Wright in the meantime:
