Things to Do Once You Crash on Homecoming

I don’t know about you guys, but this whole “school” thing is already getting me down.

You can find me at any one of these locations.

If you’re feeling the burnout like me, count yourself lucky — we have something to look forward to!

HOMECOMING

Anyone who’s spent the last few weeks getting a little too familiar with Lau’s “basement prison” interior design aesthetic, I’m with you. School sucks.

But you know what doesn’t suck? NOT spending time in Lau. Preferably, at the “football game” known as Homecoming.

When you see your friend at a party and go in for a hug but you both just fall down.

“HoCo,” as they call it at schools with football stadiums rather than bleachers, is like Christmas — it only comes once a year. So, if you find yourself being a little too ~heavy-handed~ on Saturday, don’t fear. We’ve got you.

*Plz* keep reading for a list of 4E’s top recommendations for what to do once you inevitably crash on Homecoming.

NOTE: These guidelines are ONLY for the 21+ Hoyas out there! Make good choices, kids!

Food

When hunger strikes after a long day of partying, the consequences can be disastrous. Smart Hoyas know that in order to avoid situations like these, one must come prepared. Please whip out your phones and input the following information into your speed dial:

Domino’s: (202) 342-0100

Mai Thai: (202) 337-2424

Wingo’s (RIP, but they still deliver from their new location): (202) 338-2478

Fire up your UberEats. Make a trip to Safeway and stock up on snacks. By all means, do whatever you need to do to keep your friends from being torn apart by their conflicting, relentless cravings.

God, Jan, no one else wants donuts. You’re the only one who wants donuts.

Pro Tip: A stroll to Chick-fil-a never (really) hurt nobody.

Film & Television

Homecoming is about indulgence. You could even call it Treat-Yo-Self Day. So, if you and your friends choose to settle down in front of a laptop screen after a long day of debauchery wholesome fun, try treating yourself to:

Troy

Also known as three hours of shirtless men (Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom … need I say more?) prancing around in togas, doing battle/sword stuff. The highest of entertainment.

Bend it Like Beckham

Do you ever just crave a feel-good movie with inspiring messages about female empowerment, family traditions and love? This movie is soooooo underrated.

Harry Potter

Homecoming in a nutshell.

Nothing gets me in my feels like a good old HP marathon. Throw on your jammies, sip some butterbeer (hot cocoa works too) and prepare to be transported back to a magical land of childhood innocence that is far, far away from the ~activities~ you were engaging in just hours beforehand.

Zoey 101 (or any Nickelodeon/Disney Channel throwbacks)

Me if anyone so much as mentions the words “Tito’s and lemonade”…

These are crowd-pleasers. Need I say more?

Miscellaneous Nonsense

If all else fails, there are only two things you can do:

Hit the books.

I wish I had recommendations for you, but I can’t remember the last time I read a non-YA book that I actually liked. Don’t underestimate the fun that can be had reading a book out loud to your friends, preferably upside-down/backwards while under the influence of really great writing.

Just lie down.

Floors are your friends. Show them some love this Saturday, whether you’re truly tired or want to protest against your friends for entering yet another sweaty Henle. This is the simplest, most cost-effective recommendation we at 4E could think of — 11/10 would recommend.

Thank you for sticking with me through this list of highly curated content. Have fun and be safe! ☺︎ hOyA sAxA ☺︎

Best Bets: Homecoming Style

Well, it’s that time folks. The weekend is now upon us, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has been grilled harder than a GUGS burger, and all is well with the world. Thus bears the question: what to do, what to do?

Well, if you haven’t heard already, it’s Homecoming, people! So get out your day-drinking flasks, because this weekend is about to get crazier than Honey Boo Boo after chugging her Go Go Juice. There’s a lot to do in the coming days, so here are some events that you probably don’t want to miss:

Friday:

Everyone who’s anyone is going to be attending the Mr. Georgetown Pageant in Gaston Hall watching The Hoya’s very own Jonathan Rabar take the competition’s coveted title. This year’s Pageant theme is the Hunger Games, so you best believe that it’s going get wilder than District 11 after Rue dies. Tickets are $10 in advance and $13 at the door; doors open at 7 p.m. and the Pageant begins at 7:30 p.m. Believe me, if you attend Mr. Georgetown, the odds are going to be ever in your favor.

Saturday:

Homecoming Tailgate. McDonough Gym Tent. 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Be there or be square. Actually, be there or be worse than square. Be there or be a big fat ugly rhombus. $15 in advance for students or $25 at the door.

Then, Homecoming Game. 2 p.m.  Multi-Sport Field. Brown is going down. Enough said. Get tickets here.

Oh, and for all of you hipsters who think Homecoming is too mainstream, try Gaia. The sell-out production features video art, choreography, DJs, live musicians and cuisine, all created around earth-inspired themes.

If you’re still unsure about your Saturday night, just go to DayGlow (now, “Life In Color”) along with everyone else in the universe. On second thought, don’t go to DayGlow. It’s just not okay.

Sunday:

If you aren’t nursing a hangover, writing 6 papers and cramming for your midterms, check out Daylight @ New York Avenue Beach Bar. Admission is free, but you have to RSVP. It’s sure to be a blasty blast, featuring burritos, margaritas, and a ton of house music. Oh my.

Last, but definitely not least, Gotye’s here! Go and see him before he’s just “Somebody That You Used To Know.”

Happy Homecoming, Hoyas!

Traditions Day: All That is Georgetown

Is there a better way to begin Homecoming celebrations than rejoicing in our many traditions? Yes, that was a rhetorical question. This Friday (today!) marks Traditions Day! In celebrating school spirit, Traditions Day reinforces the specific traditions of Georgetown that essentially make us “bleed Hoya blue.”

As you prepare for the crowds and the cheering and the inevitable fun that follows Homecoming weekend, plan to include today in your festivities! If you’re a freshman, you’ll especially want to take part in the traditions that will soon become apart of your life and community here at the Hilltop!

So what exactly is going on?

GUGS will be flipping burgers alongside local restaurants throughout Copley lawn and Red Square around noon. Don’t forget about Wingo’s Wing Eating Contest! Sounds like happiness on a silver platter to me. While ensuring the satisfaction of your stomach, don’t forget to stop by Healy Circle and poke fun at community members agonizing in the dunk tank, featuring our own Blog Editor Michelle Cassidy, GUSA President Clara Gustafson and other seniors.

From a grueling Tug of War match and Powderpuff football to listening to your favorite a cappella groups and watching in anticipation as the Traditions Day Cup is awarded to one of our classes; Friday will be a day of fun, spirit, and exposure to all that is Georgetown!

So what do I take from this?

Besides the entertainment, food, and games, Traditions Day provokes thought about who you are and what you’ll become as you join (if you’re new) or progress throughout the Georgetown community. Think about all these little quirks, all these little building blocks that define Georgetown. Do they define you? Are they components your perception of Georgetown? Will you smile in reminiscence twenty years from now as a distinguished alumnus when thinking about these specific traditions? I guess the only way to find out is to simply revel in it and enjoy the ride! Hoya Saxa!

Preview: Mr. Georgetown

Homecoming weekend is quickly approaching and with that comes the highly anticipated Mr. Georgetown pageant! This year, fourteen strong competitors will be vying for the crown by sacrificing blood, sweat, and tears through three intense rounds. Since it is Hunger Games themed, it is only appropriate that Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutchinson will be making an appearance…

JUST KIDDING. But if you are in the mood to watch some equally famous Georgetown hunks compete (ehem, Mr. The Hoya, Jon Rabar) be sure to come out to Gatson Hall at 7:30 PM on Friday.  (Doors open at 7 so get there early!!)  10 dollars for advanced tickets and $13 at the door. Special performances include The Phantoms, GU Bindaas, and Tate Tucker.  It will be a night you won’t want to miss as these men risk it all for the coveted title. The following tributes are as follows:

Mr. Residence Life: Danish Zaidi

Mr. Caribbean Culture Circle: Malik Stevens

Mr. Club Filipino: Dale Andrew Batoon

Mr. GERMS: Greg Ouellette

Mr. The Hoya: Jonathan Rabar

Mr.NSO: Jack Devlin

Mr. Senior Class Committee: Adrian Mansylla

Mr. Alpha Phi Omega: Derek Holiday

Mr. Black Student Alliance: Stefane Victor

Mr. College Academic Council: Andrew Glass

Mr. Mask and Bauble: Sean Keady

Mr. Phantoms: John Roach

Mr. Philodemic: Sam Dulik
