We here at The Hoya neglected to post our annual drinking game for the GUSA Vice Presidential Debate yesterday. Fortunately, we quickly have a second chance because fate Ethan Chess scheduled the GUSA Presidential Debate for tonight.
The main event is set for 8 p.m. in the Leavey Program Room and @TheHoya (and a coterie of senior GUSA wash-ups) will once again be live-tweeting the debate.
If you think we missed a good opportunity for a new rule, suggest it in the comments! And, as always, enjoy your GUSA elections responsibly.

GUSA campaigns. They’re unavoidable. Strangers keep interrupting your “House of Cards” binge (rude!) to tell you about their candidates’ platform. Red Square is lined with gargantuan posters and now your Facebook timeline is incredibly confusing because all of your friends have campaign logos as their profile pics. Hide yo’ kids, hide yo’ wives, but it doesn’t matter because these GUSA campaigns will find you.
As the loyal and hilarious “Top Site” in your web browser, 4E has decided to keep you informed about the GUSA campaigns that have been infiltrating your Georgetown existence for the past few days. But mostly we’re just interested in the same stuff you are, so here are this year’s GUSA campaign videos:
As the unbiased writer of an article called “Six Degrees of Beyoncé,” I believe the song choice was ***Flawless. Zach and Dan had a lot of hip action going on. Like, a LOT. I respect this. They committed and brought out their inner divas. While I can tell that dancing isn’t necessarily their strong suit (again, lots of hip action), they’re not auditioning for “America’s Best Dance Crew” so A+++ for effort. The choreographed dance scenes had a very “We’re All in This Together” vibe to them, and I was about it. This video, combined with the pictures from their website, only further confirms my theory that this campaign is a publicity stunt for a new NBC sitcom called “A Political Bromance: The Zach and Dan Story.” I’d watch it.
Staying in the realm of musical campaign ads, Trevor & Omika want to let us know that they’re “Happy” with a capital “H,” all while giving a nod to the massive hat Pharrell decided to wear to the Grammys. Their platform just makes Georgetown students all over the world want to get up and dance like nobody’s watching, even though the people in the background are totally watching. Their dance moves might just give Zach and Dan a run for their money (just look at their hip action). Instead of a debate or a town hall meeting, it appears a dance-off would be a better use of the public’s time.
Lastly, let’s just talk about “Tromika” for a minute. (Backstory: Trevor + Omika = Tromika). It’s very celebrity couple of them, and as an avid reader of People magazine I support this. First came Brangelina and their football team-sized, jet setting, multicultural family. Then the world plagued us with KimYe (Refer to Kanye West’s “Bound 2” music video for proof). What will Tromika bring us? The answer remains to be seen, but we’re sure it will be something “Happy.”
This video made me believe in love and honest communication. “I remember looking at you, and just seeing you sweat, and hit on every single girl in the program.” So honest and also weirdly endearing. Excellent song choice that reminds me of “The Parent Trap”? Check. Pun based on our outdated, early 2000s AOL designed, roommate-pairing/dating site? Check. Witty banter and phenomenal comedic timing? Check. Thomas and Jimmy have the group dynamic of two policemen in a buddy cop comedic movie a la “The Other Guys” and we can’t wait to see more videos from them!
These guys won’t interrupt your “House of Cards” marathoning. They get it. Short and to the point. They’re no Frank Underwoods (thank goodness!), but they plan to get the job done. Also, in accordance with their video, they’re not unreasonably physically fit, so every Joe and Jane Hoya should feel free to challenge them to an act of physical fitness. Perhaps a dance-off? It’s almost as if this is a reoccurring theme or something.
Now it’s time to vote. Well, it’s time to vote on what’s important: the videos. Which was your favorite? We’d also like to suggest a dance-off. Just be forewarned candidates, 4E will also participate and we will be victorious.
Missed what was happening on the Hilltop this week? 4E has got you covered with some of The Hoya’s most recent headlines:
Council Rules Greco Legitimate Speaker – After Georgetown University Student Association Election Commissioner Ethan Chess (COL ’14) filed a petition requesting the nullification of a recent GUSA speaker confirmation vote, the GUSA Constitutional Council ruled that the vote was invalid and that Sam Greco (SFS ’15) is the legitimate GUSA senate speaker.
Mid-Year Changes on M Street – It is a transition time for the popular Georgetown street as Mexican food franchise Qdoba closes its doors and Irish pub Rí Rá opens for business.
Poll Finds Gray Ahead With Room, Time to Fall – According to a Washington Post poll, incumbent D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray holds a double-digit lead against his competitors for the April 1 Democratic mayoral primary… but will the lead last?
Speech Forum Promises Clarity – This week GUSA and university administration held a campus-wide free speech forum which provided lively conversation and debate about Georgetown’s free speech policy and practice.
DeGioia Attends Summit – On Thursday, University President John J. DeGioia attended a White House event where over 100 college presidents and non-profit and business leaders gathered to discuss and work toward expanding college opportunities for low-income students.
Scheuer’s Right to Be Radical – The Hoya’s Editorial Board argues that in wake of adjunct professor Michael Scheuer’s suggested assassination of President Obama, the University must remember that academic freedom and heated debate must triumph over ideological conformity.
Neumann Drafted Fourth Overall by Revolution – Men’s soccer captain and senior forward Steve Neumann was drafted fourth overall by the New England Revolution during Thursday’s MLS SuperDraft.
GU Drops Second Straight – The Hoyas lost back-to-back games for the first time this season after their 57-67 defeat against Seton Hall.
Hitting the Right Notes – This week’s special music issue of the guide features the songs, stylings and backstories of several Georgetown artists, including Mellen, Old Moonlight and Tate Tucker.
The Hoya’s Molly Mitchell got the opportunity to sit down (read as: stand up) with our newly elected GUSA Executives, Nate Tisa and Adam Ramadan. Hear them discuss their very popular campaign video, their general campaigning tactics, and much more on this installment of Take 5.
In creating The GUSA Sabotage, Kwamz Garcia effectively accomplished (potentially without even trying) a hilariously epic parody of GUSA elections and the people involved in them.
From the ridiculous fight scene featuring GUSA campaign office security guards to the premise of the entire plot (if we could call it a plot at all, much of the dialogue was lost behind too-loud, ominous music), this 11-minute spectacle is a must-watch for anyone that spends an inordinate number of hours in Leavey Center. This film creates the idea that Georgetown now not only has GUSA campaign managers but also has campaign “fixers,” an idea way too believable to not laugh along with as the “Dalvster” wreaks havoc on the lives of the super-involved.
The GUSA Sabotage is complete with cameos by Murphy Kate Delaney, Andi DeBellis and our star himself, Dalvin Butler of SAC campaign video and Hoya Experience fame, which further add to the ridiculous imagining of the scattered plot. And, no joke, the film features skyline shots, seductive hair flips, and “WHO SENT YOU” Bond-esque scenes to boot.
While Kwamz Garcia almost steals the show as the Dalvster’s enforcer, five stars go out to the Dalvster himself for not only perfecting the villain laugh but also recognizing that controlling “all of” The Corp grocery stores would bring Georgetown to its knees. (See Hurricane Sandy for proof.)
While The GUSA Sabotage fails to reach the heights of the feature-length Georgetown Forever, The GUSA Sabotage team manages to showcase the almost believable potential for a House of Cards-ian development of GUSA politics and give everyone a long laugh about it in the process.
Once a week, The Hoya recognizes a staffer that has done a particularly awesome job – now you can get to know about them too. As part of our Leavey 421 series, we’ll be posting quick interviews with each Staffer of the Week!
This week, two staffers went above and beyond the call of duty to obtain the glorious Staffer of the Week title (and the even more coveted Fourth Edition interview). Read what they had to say here:
Names Annie Chen//Emma Hinchliffe
Positions on The Hoya Staff Writer and News Assistant//Campus News Editor
Schools SFS//College
Years 2015//2015
Majors International Political Economy//Government
Hometowns Taichung, Taiwan (where majority of Life of Pi was filmed, hooray!)//Glen Ridge, NJ
What did you do to earn Staffer of the Week?
Annie: I’m not entirely sure … I missed the staff meeting – I know, right?! The one meeting I don’t go to … But I suspect that maybe because I went to all the GUSA election information sessions, debates, town halls and spent like 1,000,000 hours talking and stalking the candidates for the past two weeks. Also I’ve stuck with the GUSA beat for almost a year and a half (It could be a record).
Emma: I put together our coverage of the GUSA campaigns, elections and craziness for the past couple weeks.
What’s your favorite part about working for The Hoya?
Annie: Assassin season, for real. (Writer’s Note: during the spring semester, The Hoya Office engages in a bitter war of Assassins. Hoya staffers receive hit lists and must eliminate their “targets” with squirt guns, all while watching their backs and not getting hit themselves. Personally, I am still angry at my editor, Lindsay Lee, for killing me on Lau 2 last week.) (Editor’s note: GET OVER IT, KP.) My first target last year was Connor (as in, Connor Gregoire, former Editor-in-Chief) and I will never forget his expression when I splashed him. I had never talked to him or met him before then, so his face was full of disbelief and confusion. He tried so hard to act like it was no big deal and congratulated me and shook my hand and said “Nice to meet you.” It just shows how awesome people who work for The Hoya are. But on a more serious note, my favorite part is writing campus news, being able to meet different students that I wouldn’t have otherwise met and learning about stuff students are doing to shape Georgetown in so many exciting ways.
Emma: When Braden (Executive Editor) orders a dozen Wisey’s cookies for delivery (but not when they’re oatmeal raisin).
If you had to pie someone in the face in the office, who would it be and why?
Annie: Braden, because I love how he always pronounces my name as “AHHH-nnie.” for no reason. But I always feel secretly bubbly and happy when I hear it (will Braden think I’m weird if he reads this?), so I think I’ll pie him with a sweet sugary strawberry flavored pie to express my secret crush for the way he calls my name.
Emma: Danny Funt (Editor-in-Chief), obviously. I hear his hair’s insured for $10,000.
What is your weird hidden quirky talent?
Annie: I can eat/have eaten the Chicken Caesar Salad from Grab ‘N Go for a straight five days for both lunch and dinner.
Emma: I’m really good at sleeping. It’s a special skill.
If you could name a beverage after yourself, what would it be called and what would it taste like?
Annie: Wait, I don’t get it. If it’s named after myself wouldn’t it just be called Annie? Why do I need to make it a name again? I guess it’ll be pretty tasteless in the beginning, because I’m really a boring and awkward person when I’m with people I don’t know well. But maybe bittersweet and sour if you care to take a few more sips because I can get really mean/sassy once I get to know people. (Note: I’m actually afraid to try this drink.)
Emma: Emmalasting Gobstopper and it tastes like rainbows and sunshine.
Bruce Springsteen, Madonna – way before Nirvana. There was U2 and Blondie – and music still on MTV! Her two kids in high school – they tell her that she’s uncool – cause she’s still preoccupied…
Well, aren’t we all a little pre-occupied with 1985?
I know I am, and for good reason, too. 1985 was a big year for Georgetown, and on today’s installment of This Day in Hoya History: February 22, 1985, there was a myriad of monumental events happening on the Hilltop. There were some things that were the same as today: GUSA campaigns were in full swing and everybody seemed to be talking about the economy (only this time, it was under the Reagan administration). But other things were quite novel: Village C was under construction, students were fighting against raising the drinking age and *gasp!* a certain student group was beginning to use … dare I say it … computers.
In addition, the February 22, 1985 edition of The Hoya included quite a few quirky advertisements.
Take a look at some 1985 highlights in the photo gallery below. And in the meantime, listen to this song; we all know it’s a classic.
The polls have opened! Which means that later today, we will be free from campaign season … can’t say I’m that sad to see it go. I will not miss the persistent knocks on my door, the incessant Facebook event invitations, the confusing Facebook comments because everyone has the same profile picture. But one thing I will miss is the creative campaign videos; they did tend to brighten my day. So, we’re opening our own poll! Here you go Hoyas, what we at 4E consider the best videos of each campaign (listed in alphabetical order by ticket).
We can’t think of a better way to celebrate President’s Day than by watching tonight’s GUSA presidential debate… except of course, by watching the debate and playing this game. The big event will take place in the Leavey Program Room at 8 p.m. and for those too lazy to go, The Hoya will be live-tweeting the debate. But seriously, it’s a holiday, so you really have no excuse.
As always, if you have ideas for a new rule, suggest it in our comment section! Enjoy the game, and stay safe, Hoyas.
Drink once…
For every candidate that mispronounces their running mate’s name
Every time someone says “SAC is broken”
For everyone at the debate who isn’t in GUSA, a member of campus media, or a former candidate (don’t worry, this won’t be too many)
Every time a candidate works his or her campaign slogan into an answer (it’s like when they say the title of a movie in the movie itself and seem to be really proud of it)
Every time someone hates on Hoyalink
Every time a candidate mentions ‘innovation’ or ‘solutions’
For every reference to the Catholic/Jesuit Identity
For every bizarre face the candidates make when they don’t agree with each other
Drink twice…
For every former executive candidate at the debate
Every time former VP Greg Laverriere tweets (Yeah, we kept this rule. Why? This is why)
If you haven’t figured it out from the number of campaign posters in your facebook newsfeed, GUSA election season is officially upon us. The vice presidential debate is tonight at 9 p.m. in White-Gravenor 201, and following the smash success of last year’s GUSA drinking game, we here at 4E have some tips for those of you who plan on being in attendance (and are over 21 of course!) this evening. For those who don’t want to make the trek to White-Gravenor, we hear GUTV will be live-streaming it.
Ideas for another rule? Suggest them in our comments section! And don’t worry, 4E will have you covered with a new set of rules for the presidential debate Monday.
