How to Seem Intelligent in the Upcoming School Year

With the impending start of the fall semester, many of us are itching to just get back on campus. This also means in-person classes and activities, but with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we haven’t been able to get to know each other as well as we should. One thing remains true: perception is key. Although that seems superficial, it … Okay, this intro is getting long. Here are a few things you can do to make yourself look smarter.

Know Your Way Around

GIPHY

Usually, the innocent freshman can expect a sage, experienced upperclassmen to tell them where to go. That becomes a little more difficult when about one-third of them are in the exact same boat, and unfortunately, there isn’t always going to be a helpful junior or senior around to come to the rescue. Before the confused masses start wandering across the lawns and around the halls, consider studying a map. In no time, your peers will depend on you, like boats to a lighthouse. That’s how you make friends: necessity.

Dress for Success

GIPHY

For the past year or so, we’ve all had the privilege of dressing casually. Now that our peers are finally going to be able to see below our upper torsos, an upgrade is in order. Watch out folks: business casual (or better) has just become the new casual.

Buy a Fountain Pen

GIPHY

There’s no joke here. Buy a fountain pen. Unless you’re willing to refill cartridges or, God forbid, toss them out when you’re done with them, buying a converter and an ink bottle is highly recommended (mileage depends on usage and nib size). Here are a few recommendations:

(Tip: You can store ink using the entire body of the pen. To do this, you need an o-ring, silicone grease and a syringe/eyedropper. Here’s a how-to video: https://youtu.be/3qWXqOu3sfc?t=331)

Take Notes on Paper

GIPHY

Now that you have your nifty new fountain pen, it’s time to put it to good use. Taking physical notes has been known to boost understanding of the subject being written down, which makes it something worth considering. Though carrying around a binder can be a little inconvenient, what better way is there to show off your stationary and/or handwriting? You never know when your word processor is going to erase all your work.*

Read Your Professors’ Books

GIPHY

You’re checking your physics professor’s profile on GU360. As you scroll down toward the bottom, reading about all of their greatest accomplishments, something catches your eye. They’ve written a book: “The Doppler Effect and Earthquakes.” Is it something that interests you? No. Should you read it? Yes. Even if you have no interest in the subject, reading your professor’s book can help you establish some credibility. You’re going to need something to gush about to your professor during office hours, after all.

Familiarize Yourself with the Acronyms

PINTEREST

GUTS, GUSA, and GERMS, oh my! Georgetown does love acronyms, and confusingly enough, many of them begin with “GU.” Similar to memorizing a map of our campus, knowing all of them will help you stand out. People don’t need this information, per se, but it’s just helpful to know. By the way, how do you pronounce GUGS again?

Hoya Saxa Ca$h Money

willow-2

Who says making money is hard? One Georgetown student is proving that wrong.

Cristina Velasquez (SFS ’17) recently won $1,500 on the Ellen show! How did she do this? She played Ellen’s new show “Whip My Hair Back and Forth.”

Despite this being the most ridiculous game ever, the money went to a great cause: breast cancer research! Ellen gave $10,000 to breast cancer research and $1,500 to Cristina herself.

Best part? Cristina got invited to come back in November to see One Direction perform on Ellen. Officially beyond jealous.

Hoya Saxa to you too, Ellen!

Obama Is Joining Georgetown’s Snapchat

snapobama

If you didn’t already know, Obama will be speaking on campus this Tuesday for a summit on poverty in the U.S. Conveniently, he will be speaking only a few days after most of us Hoyas have left campus… but for those of you sticking around, listen up! Georgetown will be doing its own Snapchat story just for this event, so pull out your iphones and get snapping.

Here are some things we wish we could see Obama do on Georgetown’s Snapchat story:

1. Sit on JC’s lap just like a drunken undergrad. (Warning: Climbing up there is harder than it looks)

2. Step on the seal in front of Healy, it would make for a cringe worthy 6 seconds.

3. Have a casual meal at O’Donovan’s by the Waterfront, #yum.

4. Throw around the old hippy biscuit with the boys… newest member of Ultimate Frisbee?

5. Getting bitten by Jack (just kidding, we don’t need a repeat).

6. Selfie with the one and only Todd Olson (because who wouldn’t want one).

7. A dip in Dahlgren Fountain (actually, no one wants to see that).

8. A classic Obama fist bump, #change.

9. A selfie with Jack the Bulldog, just to make Bo and Sunny jealous.

10. Maybe an actual 10 second video of his speech.

Follow Georgetownuniv on Snapchat to keep up with the snaps!

See you soon, Obama.

Georgetown Takes Top Spot for Social Media Influence

Social MediaHere on the Hilltop, we already pride ourselves on being smart, but now, we can celebrate a new accomplishment: being social media savvy. According to InTheCapital, Georgetown University garnered the best Klout score of all D.C.-area schools.

Klout is an analytics company started in 2008 that aims to measure users’ “influence” through social media presence. It tracks over 400 signals from 8 different social networks and then assigns users a score from 1 to 100. The higher the score given, the more influence a user has.

(President Obama currently boasts a Klout score of 99, while Justin Bieber and Zooey Deschanel received scores of 92 and 86, respectively.)

With active accounts on all of Klout’s measured platforms (including Instagram, Facebook and Twitter), Georgetown took the top spot for its social media presence with a score of 92. Close behind were Johns Hopkins and — sadly — George Washington University with scores of 91. University of Maryland and University of Virginia finished in the top five both with scores of 90.

An Interview with Jack DeGioia

Today, the Washington Post ran a special interview with Georgetown President Jack DeGioia, who talked about his style of leadership, the challenges the Hilltop currently faces and his goals for the university’s future. Here’s a peek at what President DeGioia had to say:

09.06.11news-flickr-degioia-editThere is no substitute for face-to-face encounters. This year, I will deliver about 230 speeches to a mostly Georgetown audience of one size or another. Probably most important for me are a regular series of town halls were I report out on the issues, challenges and progress to date and take questions from the members of our community. We’ve also tried to use social media in a way that enables us to reach a broader audience. We have found Facebook to be particularly effective to share some of the activities that I am personally engaged in and that characterize what the university is doing.

InstagraMondays: Homecoming Edition

insta mondays

They say a picture is worth 1,000 words. Toss a filter and 30 likes on it and it’s worth even more. Take a look at some of our favorite Instagrams from this weekend and stop back next Monday to see if yours were featured on 4E’s newest weekly feature, InstagraMondays! Also follow The Hoya on Instagram here.

Nothing says “arriving at Georgetown” like a picture from across the bridge…

except for maybe this festive balloon arch.

Most of us started our day off with the Homecoming Tailgate, which was full of people, fun and hashtags…

…and then proceeded to the ‘main event:’ the football game against Princeton, where the ominous skies were made more dramatic by whatever filter this is (10 points to Gryffindor if you can guess).

The 224 Project

224

Red Square. There might not be a more perfect place to capture the vibrant life of Georgetown. After all, it is an area where people bribe you with cookies and homemade snow cones just so you’ll pick up a flyer or sign up for a particular organization. It is the home of delicious GUGS burgers on Fridays, people watchers, ambitious flyer-ers and stragglers during the week and even passionate club promoters during GAAP weekends. Still, because of our busy and hectic lives, it can often be very easy to zone out with our headphones in and lose sight of who is standing around us during that ordinary Red Square walk.

In order to take a second out of our crazy schedules and get to know our community a little better, The Hoya instituted a very special project. Last year, the 223 Project aimed to showcase the many faces of the Georgetown Community by randomly selecting 223 students, faculty, staff and administrators passing through, you guessed it, Red Square.

This year, the tradition continues as Georgetown enters its 224th year of existence. Photos and captions of some of the numerous faces that make up the university are live on the website, manyfaces.thehoya.com, as of today, Monday, April 22 (If we were basically in any country besides the U.S., the launch date would be 22/4. Get it?) Their pictures and bios will also be seen throughout campus in various locations:

The first floor corridor of Healy – April 22
Red Square – April 23
Leavey Center – April 24

Don’t miss out on this inspiring celebration of our school community!

Georgetown: Where Brains Meet Beauty

120912-intellectual

Ah, The Hilltop. We’d all like to think that Georgetown is a place where intelligent people come to bask in each others wisdom (despite the fact that so many people apparently don’t know how to flush toilets or get a napkin INSIDE of a trash can and not next to one), and this is true. But apparently brains aren’t all we have to bring to the table. According to a recent list published by Business Insider, we are ranked #4 in the “25 Colleges Where The Students Are Both Hot And Smart”.

Georgetown University was also recently ranked the 6th “Most Attractive Workforce” by the Hinge dating app.

You hear that? Brains AND beauty. Looks like you CAN have it all, my fellow Hilltop-ians!
