Overheard at President Trump’s Inauguration

Well, it’s official: Donald Trump is The President of the United States. And while I’m sure all of you spent Friday, January 20th making signs for the Women’s March watching the inauguration ceremony, here are some of the best “Overheard at Inauguration” moments that you may have missed, courtesy of your friends here at 4E.

Friday Fixat10ns: Some Chill Tunes

Do you ever feel completely freakin’ exhausted after a long week?  Are you so happy that Friday afternoon has arrived and all you want to do for the next few hours is chill?  Are you looking for perfect cool and relaxing playlist to make your Friday sweet?  Well this Friday Fixat10ns playlist is just what you need.  We at 4E  are concerned about your inner peace, your inner chakra as I like to call it.  So do yourself a favor and just listen.

1. East Coast Girl- Cayucas. This ultimate poppy indie band hailing from Southern California will have you thinking about sun, palm trees, and the beach in no time.  Even though this song is called East Coast Girl, it still truly gives off some good vibes.

2. Always – Panama. Hitting an even more calming note, Always by Panama takes on an eclectic dramatic tune.  Oh how this song is so perfect for ultimate relaxation.

3. Naked Kids- Grouplove. Ahhh, my favorite hippy group!  I love them, purple hair and all.  This song will also have you wishing you were “cruisin’ down the highway, with your friends topdown”.  Summer is coming soon, kids! Don’t worry.

4. Hollywood – RAC. Although I usually add this tune to my pre-game playlist, it’s also great for some background noise. RAC has recently popped up more within the poppy indie scene as their sound has a harmonious combination of pop and

5. Wide Eyes- Local Natives. If you haven’t heard of them, they two have a great sound and a quirky flair.  If Wide Eyes does not help you find your inner chakra, then I don’t know what will.

6. Modern Jesus – Portugal. The Man. I’ve always been taken by Portugal. The Man’s luring and intense lyrics, but their sound is also something to take note of. Modern Jesus may leave you feeling quite pensive.

7. Climbing Walls – Strange Talk. I randomly stumbled upon this tune a while back on Youtube and figured it should make the list. It’s super catchy, so watch out.

8. October – Broken Bells. I love Broken Bells because they are composed of the same artist/producer of The Shins, another band with beautifully constructed songs.

9. Phantom Limbs – The Shins. Have you found that ultimate relaxed level yet? After 8 songs, I think you have to be almost there! Just keep listening, just keep listening!

10. The Suburbs – Arcade Fire. You’ve probably heard of these guys as they have been making the festival rounds over the last few years. This particular song is just the right amount of chill.

Friday Fixat10ns: Songs to Fuel Your Run

As we near the end of March the weather is improving, the birds are chirping and the incessant crowd of DC runners are continuing to take on the sidewalks. If you are not already, 4E encourages you to get out and join the fun!

We understand, however, if the prospect of putting on athletic clothes and actually partaking in physical activity has you feeling like this:

It can be daunting, but no matter what long winded string of excuses you can make for yourself, WE BELIEVE IN YOU! And we have put together a playlist as a form of encouragement. In no time at all you’ll be like this:

  1. Uptown Funk- Bruno Mars, Mark Ronson. The ultimate pump up song to start of the run. If your pacing isn’t good, the beat in this song will surely help you get through the pain.
  2. I’m Still Standing- Elton John. Second song is where you really wanna give up, hey you’ve already ran a little why do more. This song will remind you that you are up and doing this. So, why stop?
  3. Lose Yourself- Eminem. Literally lose yourself as you listen to this song. Pretend you are on a beach, sleeping, just not running/dying like you probably are in reality.
  4. Dog Days are Over- Florence + the Machine. Almost half way there, you are past the hard part. Enjoy the serenity of this song and the serenity of this less painful part of this thing we call exercise.
  5. Talk Dirty- Jason Derulo. What makes a run better than picturing Jimmy Fallon doing his cover of this song? The original is amazing too, enjoy the hilarious lyrics and the obsessive beat.
  6. All I Do is Win- DJ Khaled. You are killin’ it. Really, all you do is win. You are making this run yours, there is no stopping. In the words of the poetic DJ Khaled all you do is win “no matter what”. Keep it up.
  7. Team- Lorde. We are all your team (aka your cheer squad) here. You have so much support behind you, keep on keeping up.
  8. Anaconda- Nicki Minaj. Nothing like a little Nicki to get you excited and in the mood to finish this run. You better do the rap or you are not a real person.
  9. I Love it- Icona Pop. You love this run, you love this exercise, you love that this thing is almost over! Celebrate with this iconic song and make sure to scream out the chorus while doing so.
  10. How Far We’ve Come- Matchbox Twenty. YOU DID IT. You have made it to the end of your run, congrats! Look at what you have done and all the songs that have helped you get there. Killin’ it.

Friday Fixat10ns: Summer Throwbacks

With the weather hitting sub-zero temperatures, there is no better time to think of the beach and all the heat we could be enjoying. Spring break is only a few weeks away!

1. “Under the Boardwalk” – The Drifters

This classic hit embodies the naivety that we all feel in the summertime. Don’t you just wanna chill under the boardwalk?

2. “Toes” – Zac Brown Band

This song combines two of my favorite things: summer and the Spanish language. I do not understand why “adios y vaya con Dios” makes me dream of the beach, but I don’t hate it! Vamos a la playa.

3. “Summer of ’69” – Bryan Adams

I cannot listen to this song without having it stuck in my head for at least a day. If I were alive, I bet ’69 would have been the best summer of my life, too.

4. “Brown Eyed Girl” – Van Morrison

God sometimes I wish I had brown eyes just so I could pretend this song is about me. You might be thinking, why is this summer themed? But, doesn’t the bouncy tempo and “sha la la”s just make you feel so happy and carefree?

5. “Island in the Sun” – Weezer

When you’re on a holiday, this is the best song. For sure. This song just explains how good a vacation really feels.

6. “Here Comes the Sun” – The Beatles

This song is so innocent and heartfelt. It is the perfect song to remind you that even though winter is horrible right now, in the end it will get better and be summer. We are almost there.

7. “If You Like Pina Coladas” – Jimmy Buffett

Okay I am a little biased because my family loves Jimmy Buffett, but this song always helps me get through the winter months. But since I do like pina coladas, I always start craving them when I hear the song.

8. “Margaritaville” – Jimmy Buffett

Wasting away in heaven with this song. The mix of chill and catchy is unbeatable, this might be my ultimate feel good summer jam.

9. “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” – The Beach Boys

This song always makes me think of 50 First Dates, AKA one of the best love stories of all time. Wouldn’t it be nice if it were warm, sunny and we were all on the beach having a really really good time?

10. “Soak Up the Sun” – Sheryl Crow

“It’s not having what you want, it’s wanting what you got” are some of the realest words that have ever been spoken. There is no better song to inspire you look on the bright side and soak up what you got.

We are kinda almost there Hoyas. Enjoy this time and get ready for some sunny beach weather in a few months!

Friday Fixat10ns: Love Through the Decades

Once again, 4E has you covered when it comes to having the perfect playlist for your valentine. They’ll be impressed by the fact that you have a song for every decade. Hopefully, this evolution of love songs will try to express what you’ve been wanting to say all along.

1. The 1920s: “Let’s Do It” – Cole Porter. Cole Porter might have lived back in the day, but he really got to the point. I mean let’s face it, everyone does it. Fall in love that is.

2. The 1930s: “Rhythm and Romance” – Ella Fitzgerald. Ella Fitzgerald is the Queen of Jazz, the First Lady of Song. Ella, your pure, jazzy voice can serenade anyone to fall in love.

3. The 1940s: “Five Minutes More” – Frank Sinatra. Maybe five minutes more will make a difference if you break out some Frank Sinatra. Guys take note, Frank Sinatra will always make a girl swoon.

9. The 2000s: “U Got It Bad” – Usher. Usher is the man when it comes to creating sexy and passionate renditions expressing love. Yes, that sentence was supposed to be extremely cheesy.

10. The 2010s: “Stay With Me” – Sam Smith. Due to the fact Sam Smith just took home 4 Grammy’s, I think he belongs on this wondrous list. Let’s face it, Sam Smith can steal anyone’s heart with his oh so beautiful voice.

Friday Fixat10ns: Grammy Awards 2015

The 57th annual Grammy Awards are on Sunday night, and we are in for a treat! LL Cool J is hosting (for the fourth year in a row), there are bound to be great performances and – wait, “Jealous” by Nick Jonas wasn’t nominated for Song of the Year???

So no awards show is perfect, especially not one for something as subjective as music. But there are some fine nominees this year, as there are every year, and we’ve put together a playlist of 10 notable nominated songs for your enjoyment.

1. Sia – “Chandelier” One of the year’s best music videos, in my opinion. This song has been nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year (don’t ask me how those two are different), Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Producer and Video of the Year (along with “Turn Down for What”).

2. Sam Smith ft. Mary J. Blige – “Stay With Me (Darkchild Remix) An excellent appearance from Mary J. on a now-ubiquitous song, though she isn’t the only famous person to collaborate with Sam Smith. A$AP Rocky did a verse on “I’m Not the Only One”, and Sam Smith himself was a guest on Disclosure’s hit “Latch.”

3. Taylor Swift – “Shake It Off” Love her or hate her, no one can deny that Taylor Swift knows how to make a catchy tune. Although to be honest, my favorite track from 1989 is definitely “Blank Space.”

4. Meghan Trainor – “All About That Bass” Nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year (seriously, what is the difference? Please tell me), this song catapulted Meghan Trainor into the public eye.

5. Hozier – “Take Me to Church” Hozier is Andrew Hozier-Byrne, an Irish musician who can rock a man bun. He is also excellent live – check out his appearance on SNL.

6. Disclosure ft. Mary J. Blige – “F For You” Despite the fact that Settle, the album on which this track appears, came out in 2013, “F For You” managed to snag a nomination for Best Dance Recording. Also, note that Mary J. Blige is racking up the nominations-by-guest-appearance.

7. Arctic Monkeys – “Do I Wanna Know?” AM was also released in 2013. Nevertheless, “Do I Wanna Know?” is a great song and this band (one of my favorites) got a nomination for Best Rock Performance.

8. Beyoncé – “Drunk In Love”  Recently “covered” by Will Ferrell, this song has cemented its place in pop culture for a looooong time (surfbort, anyone?). Personally, I like to skip Jay-Z’s weird and not very good verse and stick to the good stuff (Bey).

9. Kendrick Lamar – “i” One of the singles from Kendrick’s forthcoming album (due any day now, or something like that), “i” is a message of positivity and self-respect. A great track from a hopefully great album.

10. Kanye West – “Bound 2” Nominated for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and Best Rap Song, “Bound 2” has a timeless classic of a music video. It’s also one of the best songs on Yeezus. Let’s hope 2015 brings another classic Kanye album (that’ll rack up the nominations for Grammys 2016).

So tune in Feb. 8 to see who wins! CBS is broadcasting starting at 5:00 pm. Hopefully this playlist will help you prepare for the show. Or, you know, you can be like me and just listen to “Jealous” over and over.

Friday Fixat10ns: A Cappella Edition

Sure, instruments are cool and all, but sometimes it is fun to just enjoy the sweet harmonies of talented singers. The 42nd Cherry Tree Massacre is upon us, and we here at 4E are getting ready by filling our ears with some of the hottest a cappella tracks out there.

“Let’s Get It On”- Pentatonix

Pentatonix is probably the hottest a cappella group out there right now, and they got their start on NBC’s short-lived TV competition “The Sing Off”. I was a huge fan of the show, and Pentatonix stole my heart with this killer performance. If you’re a fan, you should check out their whole run through the show.

“Final Performance”- Barden Bellas

I’ll be honest – I loved the movie Pitch Perfect. I was hesitant watching it the first time, but the story is pretty funny, and the music is killer. I couldn’t make an a cappella list without this jam.

“Final Performance”- Treblemakers

Couldn’t include one without the other. This is the other final performance in the movie, from the “bad boys of a cappella”. If you say you can’t jam along to this track, you either don’t have a musical bone in your body, or you’re a liar.

“Bon Jovi Medley”- Straight No Chaser

Brought to the mainstream by their Christmas medleys, Straight No Chaser is a pretty famous a cappella group from the University of Indiana. They have a ton of songs to choose from, including a lot of medleys and mash-ups, but this one just felt right.

“Sweet Caroline”- The Beelzebubs

Another group of “Sing Off” superstars, these heart-melting gentlemen are from Tufts University. I personally just love the song, but it’s also a great performance/serenade.

“Dog Days are Over”- Pentatonix

Sorry, I know I already included them once, but they crushed basically every performance while on the “Sing Off,” so I figured I’d give you guys another taste. (Performance starts around 1:40)

“The Lion Sleeps Tonight”- A Cappella Soul

Admittedly, they have one guy playing an instrument (I think it’s a stand-up bass), but this is one of the coolest a cappella groups I’ve been able to find. They’ve got great vocals, and put on a really entertaining performance.

“Telephone Line”- The Georgetown Chimes

I couldn’t write an a cappella post without including something from last year’s Cherry Tree Massacre. This one grabbed my attention live, and got me hooked on the original song. I think that’s all you can ask for in an a cappella performance.

“Take Me To Church”- The Georgetown Saxatones

If you are heading to Cherry Tree tonight or Feb 7, you will have the honor of seeing the Saxatones perform as well. They killed DCAF in the Fall and this song is one of their best from that performance. You should also check out their version of “Bang Bang” because it is killer.

“Evolution of Beyoncé”- Pentatonix

Okay, this actually is the last Pentatonix song. They are just too amazing. The Evolution of Beyoncé is more that just a song, it is an experience. What a better way to honor the Queen that is Queen B.

Wednesday Fixat10ns: Our Blunger Games Party Edition

Wednesday FixationsHi, y’all. Happy Wednesday. I hope your Hump Day is passing along smoothly, and I hope your first full week of classes is going splendidly. I’d also like to strongly urge you to apply to The Hoya and, more specifically, to 4E. When you do, you’ll get to write fun posts like this one and go to parties with us. *shameless self-promotion*

Speaking of, 4E is actually having a little party this weekend. It’s going to be Hunger Games-themed and we’re calling it the Blunger Games (Get it? Blog + Hunger Games?). It’s probably going to look like this:

But even though you can’t join us for the endless amounts of fun and shenanigans that we will engage in this fin de semana, we didn’t want you to leave here empty-handed. That’s why we made this playlist for you. Usually we do this on Fridays, but that’s when we’re having our party. Sorry, not sorry.

1. The Hanging Tree (DIA Plattenpussys Edit) — Jennifer Lawrence We’re going to start the night with this one because it’s from the Mockingjay soundtrack and the remix will get us hyped for battle. Also, who knew Jennifer Lawrence was such a phenomenal singer?

2. Hungry Like The Wolf — Duran Duran Obviously at the Hunger Games, people are hungry. At the Blunger Games, we are Hungry Like The Wolf.

3. Tainted Love — Soft Cell This song really seems to hit at the heart of the whole Peeta-Katniss relationship drama. So I added it.

4. I Knew You Were Trouble — Taylor Swift Yup. President Snow, this one’s for you.

5. Boss A** B**** — Nicki Minaj featuring PTAF This is how Katniss must feel every time she hits somebody with a flaming arrow.

6. Here In Your Arms — Hellogoodbye Here’s another one for Katniss and Peeta. Or do I mean Katniss and Gale? (The world will never know.) Also, I never got over my angsty phase in middle school.

7. I Will Survive — Gloria Gaynor Number one objective at the Blunger Games: Survival.

8. ***Flawless (featuring Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche) — Beyoncé Remember that part where Katniss is on the TV show and she spins around and her dress lights on fire like she’s some volcano? Good, because I’m sure she had this song in her head while it was happening.

9. Coco — Gnash (O.T. Genasis Cover) This one goes out to our Deputy Editor, Courtney “Coco” Klein. It will also provide us with a nice respite from all the violence of the Games.

10. All I Do Is Win — DJ Khaled featuring Ludacris, Rick Ross, T-Pain and Snoop Dogg In the Blunger Games, as in life, there are losers. But not my Blunger Games team. We are going to win.

Friday Fixat10ns: Best Covers/Remixes of 2014

As the year winds down and the radios countdown to the “Top Songs of the Year”, we here at 4E have decided to take a different route. Why deal with the normal songs, when we never do normal?

Instead, for this holiday season we are bringing you the best covers/remixes of the year.

1. Coco Gnash

Maybe I only like this song because my nickname is Coco … but I really do think this version is much better than the original. There is nothing better than hearing “I’m in love with the coco” over and over. If you haven’t listened to the two songs in contrast to each other yet, get on it.

2. Bang Bang 3Lau Radio Remix

This song was stuck in my head for a good month this year. When I heard this remix, I immediately judged it because I was “so over the song”. However, this is actually an amazing remix. And because of it, the song is once again stuck in my brain for eternity.

3. Flawless Remix Beyoncé Ft. Lil Kim

As a Beyoncé lover and devotee, I have committed all of her songs to memory. This remix is all a Beyoncé/music lover could ever want in a remix: the classic words of Beyoncé mixed with an insanely amazing beat. Flawless, literally. (Also check out the version featuring Nicki Minaj, it’s equally great.)

4. I’m Not The Only One ASAP Rocky

Even though this song is so sad and emotional, it is one of my all time favorites. It is the perfect mix of heartwrenching and badass. This remix takes the song from “too sad” to the perfect mix of emotions. And for any of you Kanye lovers, make sure to listen to Carlos Serrano’s remix of this song.

5. Waves  Mr. Probz (1st Born Cover)

This is one of my sister’s favorite songs and she begged me to include this. In my opinion, I like how this song is slower than the original. It is more thought provoking and in her words, “We could do ballet to this song”. No matter what, it is just insanely beautiful.

6. Habits (Stay High) Tove Lo (Cover by Brandon Skeie)

This is the song that perfectly explains getting over someone. The slower pace is perfect as it focuses more on the music of the song and less on the beat.

7. Sexual Healing Marvin Gaye (Kygo Remix)

This remix is a modern take on the song which makes me love the song all over again. There is something about taking something old and changing it for today that always (well, usually) works. Bravo.

8. Bound 2 Kanye West (Sigma Remix)

Bound 2 is one of my recent Kanye favorites. This version is awesome and a nice mix, in comparison to the original. A new favorite of mine, definitely.

9. Closing Time Semisonic (Raone Franco Remix)

Okay, this is not a 2014 song. But since “Friends with Benefits” is a timeless movie, this remix is pertinent no matter the year. No matter the year, the remix or the singer, this song will always hold a special place in my heart.

10. Fancy Iggy Azalea (Yellow Claw Remix)

While there are so many “Fancy” remixes, my family (because they helped me with this) and I all agree that this version is the one we would want to hear more than the others. “Fancy” was such a pertinent song in this year and it could never be forgotten. Thanks Iggy!

Friday Fixat10ns: An Indie Christmas

Well, it looks like finals are all over and all of us brain-dead Hoyas are relaxin’ at home for a little TLC.  As you shove your mouth full of Christmas cookies and lay around in your flannel PJs, listen to this little list of chill indie tunes. It will put you in a holidaze.

1. Holiday Vampire Weekend

Even though this group of lyrical geniuses will be singing “Dreidel, Dreidel” instead of “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”, we still need them in our Christmas album.  All I want for Christmas is to be serenaded by Ezra Koenig.

2. Wonderful Christmastime The Shins

Usually when I listen to the Shins, I just try to simply wrap my head around the meaning of their songs, but this poppy Christmas tune is anything but complicated.  We are just simply having a wonderful Christmastime.

3. Santa Stole My Lady Fitz and the Tantrums

I guess Santa’s on the naughty list this year according to Mr. Fitz.  Keep tabs on your lady because you may find that fat jolly old man charming the socks off of her.  Hide your mistletoe, guys.

4. Sleigh Ride She & Him

Zooey Deschanel is doing more than just singing to Will Ferrell in “Elf.” She and M. Ward have created a whole album just for the holidays.  This duo just makes you want to sip some overly priced coffee at a hip coffee shop and ponder life.

5. Jingle Bell Rock Rogue Wave

“Jingle Bell Rock,” such a classic.  A little different from the “Jingle Bell Rock” played in your fave film Mean Girls, this version creates a laid back vibe.

6. Auld Lang Syne Andrew Bird

If you’re looking for an indie/folk twist on this traditional Scottish song that you have probably never heard of, then this is perfect for you.  This song is all about change and starting the new year off right and for most of us, this is very relevant.

7. Christmas Party Dr. Dog

Put your ugly Christmas sweater on and get ready for a groovy Christmas party.  This song takes you back to an era only our grandparents know.  I feel like I should hear this playing in the background of a “Mad Men” Christmas episode.

8. Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) Death Cab for Cutie

Oh Death Cab for Cutie you bring me back to the late 90s, when I was only a wee child. This version of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” is spot on.  I’m sure your baby will come home after they hear your sultry voice.

9. Blue Christmas Bright Eyes

Please do not be blue this holiday, but please do listen to this calming song about a sad lad who is missing his S/O during the holiday.  It’s not really a poppy indie tune about holiday cheer, but it’ll give ya the feels.

10. The Christmas Song The Raveonettes

This ’60s style song is about not wanting Christmas to end and I think all of us can relate to that.  This song has such a chill vibe that it just makes you want to cruise down the PCH under the California sun.
