Georgetown Day Drinking Hacks

Georgetown Day Drinking Hacks

The time has come for ALL Georgetown students to relax, let loose and celebrate the end of classes. Georgetown Day is almost here and 4E is ready to get you very excited for all of the debauchery.

One who has experienced the ridiculousness of Georgetown Day knows that you will be moving from townhouse to rooftop to lawn to (insert pizza place here) to your bed.  You’ll be on the move and therefore will need a nifty way to carry your libations safely from brunch to party.  4E is here to give you some Georgetown Day drinking hacks!

Hack #1: Go to SNAXA and use the slushie machine to create the perfect portable beverage!  Need a cold drink to cool you off after dancing too much on the Vil A rooftop? Run over to SNAXA and get a slushie, then pour a little bit of your fav alc in it.  I recommend some vodka or rum!

Hack #2: The Corp cups will be your best friend!  Just order your fav coffee drink and add Kahlua or Bailey’s! You’ll feel energized and buzzed.

Hack #3: Einstein’s orange juice. You can’t go wrong with orange juice as your solid chaser or cocktail accoutrement.  Run down to Einstein’s in the morning and grab an orange juice to make the perfect mimo. Take a bagel while you’re at it, because eating something to soak up that andré is essential.

Hack #4: Get a straw for your personal bottle of André. I don’t think I need to explain why this drinking hack is a must. Let’s just say a straw is efficient and you won’t be sloppily getting champagne all over you.

Hack #5: And of course, you can never go wrong with carrying around a personal flask!

Here are just a few of the many approaches one can take when carefully transporting their precious gin & juice. Just remember to drink responsibly!

Gather Around the Table: Georgetown Food Clubs

breakfastmain-copy

Few things bring people together quite like a good meal. Georgetown is a prime example of this. Leo’s is filled with groups of friends trying to enjoy whatever happens to be served up that day, or suffering together waiting in long lines.

However, recently more focused groups have risen on campus. We have always had GUGS, but now clubs like GUAC (Georgetown University Avocado Club) and Pi Zeta Alpha: The Pizza Fraternity are getting started. This has led to a simple question, what’s next?

Here are a few more food clubs that would suit Georgetown well:

Food Truck Chasers – One of the benefits of living in a city like D.C. is the interesting array of food trucks that are scattered around the city. Georgetown students’ only experience with food trucks shouldn’t be just the one that parks in Healy Circle on late night weekends. Many food trucks serve extremely good food, and there is such a variety that it is worth trying to experience as many of them as you can. A personal favorite is the Swizzler truck. Swizzler serves gourmet hot dogs, with a variety of toppings that will satisfy anyone’s taste. Swizzler is normally right outside the front gates on Fridays, so its a convenient, natural, and tasty place to start. Check them out on Twitter (@swizzlerfoods) for their complete schedule. If you like them, expand and try the other trucks D.C. has to offer. You can find things from tacos, to gyros, to pizza. Find something you like and chase them down because they are always on the move. The website “Food Truck Fiesta” has an active map of where the trucks are, and can be found here.

See-Food: The Seafood Club – Georgetown is located within close proximity to both the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean leading to a city that offers a variety of fresh seafood. Fresh seafood is hard to come by most places, and we should take advantage of the fact we have such quality seafood in our neighborhood. The best part of the seafood club is that you have so many options. One trip could be for a casual, cheap lunch at a place like Tackle Box which is right on M St. (unfortunately closed for renovations right now, but highly reccomend when it opens back up). A week later, the club could head over to the Washington Harbour and get all dressed up and get a nice seafood dinner at a place like Farmers Fishers Bakers. However, there are so many other great seafood options around D.C. that need to be explored.

Brunch Bunch – It seems that a nice Saturday morning brunch is a fan favorite here at Georgetown. There are a ton of places both in Georgetown and across D.C. that offer an exceptional brunch. Brunch prices are often very different depending on what the restaurant offers, but you will be always be able to find one that caters to your budget and wants. One spot close to campus with an especially tasty brunch is Fiola Mare. For $28, you get a choice of beverage, an appetizer, entree, and dessert. An extremely good deal that can be found down on the waterfront at 3050 K St. Many restaurants advertise their brunches on the chalkboard stand-up signs outside their front doors, so keep an eye out next time you are walking down Wisconsin or M, because you just may find something that catches your eye.

Fly With Us: Wings – Chicken wings are a personal favorite of mine, and rarely do you find someone who does not enjoy a good plate of wings. They go perfect with sporting events and good friends. Every restaurant has their own spin on wings, and especially the sauces. Often times it’s the sauces that really distinguish one wing from another. Many places offer what they claim to be the “hottest” wings, as well as many establishments offering deals like all you can eat wings for a flat price. This makes wings perfect for a club looking to try all the different takes on a classic staple. A place I recommend to begin with is First Down Sports Bar in nearby Ballston, Virginia. It is a short cab or metro ride away. They offer 40 flavors of sauce, as well as having 28 TVs in the restaurant, making it a perfect place to go watch a game with some friends. On Monday’s they offer 59 cent wings, and Wednesday’s it is all you can eat wings for $18. We’ve all tried Wingos, but there are so many other places around D.C. that offer great wings, so get a group together and go see who can handle the hottest wings.

Eating History – One of the coolest parts about being in D.C. is constantly being surrounded by history. We are within walking distance of the National Mall, White House and so many other historical landmarks. With that said, all the leaders of our nation had to eat somewhere, right? Get together, pick your favorite person in our nation’s history and find out where they liked to eat. Restaurants love to advertise their historical connections so it won’t be hard to find. An easy and classic place to start is Martin’s Tavern, right at the corner of Wisconsin and N. There JFK proposed to Jackie, and presidents ranging from Truman to George W. Bush have enjoyed a meal there. Places all across D.C. will offer you a great meal and a taste of history, so get a group together and try it out.

These are just a few ideas for potential future food clubs that would be successful here on campus. Although, they don’t need to be a school sanctioned club to be enjoyed. If you and your friends enjoy a similar taste in something, get off campus and try what D.C. has to offer to you. There is too much good food in this city that is going uneaten.

How to Celebrate Galentine’s Day

galentines

Do you know what this Friday is?!!??

giphy (2)

Well, yes… but NO! IT’S GALENTINE’S DAY!

Last year 4E brought you a glorious introduction to “Your New Favorite Holiday” and we’re here to remind that you’re in luck – It’s that time of year again!

What is Galentine’s Day you might ask?

tumblr_lzbdw1AqLq1qf4k1oo2_250

For those of you Parks and Rec fans out there, and really for ALL of you guys and gals (but mostly gals), Galentine’s Day is the perfect prelude to the forever dreaded/over-anticipated V-day.

It is no secret that for most, Valentine’s Day generally turns out to be some extent of a disappointment. Whether you spend the day gawking at cute couples, chocolates, flowers and bears while being reminded of your own nonexistent love life, or whether you obsess, over-anticipate and set the bar too high for your own significant other, Valentine’s Day is mostly a day of inevitable letdown. However, we here at 4E are here to tell you that it does not have to be like this.

The solution: Galentine’s Day

giphy (1)

Here are some things to do on Friday that will bring you so much love and companionship that you will forget it’s a holiday:

1. Get started extra early with Galentine’s Day at the Women’s CenterHead over to the Women’s Center tomorrow (Wednesday) at 6:30 pm for treats, crafts, and company!

2. Invest in a great brunch, the ultimate gal pal time.

giphy (6)

3. Go see 50 Shades of Grey. I know you’re all thinking it so here are the details for Friday: Showtimes: 1:00 pm, 4:00 pm, 7:00 pm, 8:45 pm, 10:00 pm
Fandango cost: $10.56

4. Bake cookies, cakes and chocolate-covered everything. Take over your common room and/or someone’s apartment and let out your inner culinary desires while satisfying your craving for non-diet friendly sweets.

5. Go crazy with crafts! Scissors, glue, glitter – get creative, make a frame, make a gift and, most importantly, make a mess.

6. Make an Insta-Collage. Do you even need a reason to compile all of your favorite gal pics (awkward, cute, embarrassing, etc.)?! Take advantage of the excuse to express your love via social media!

7. Or do this:

Whatever you do, make a point to serenade the awesome gals in your life. Happy Galentine’s Day!

Hump Day Chomp: The Diner

humpdaychomp

Hump Day Chomp is a new weekly posting that intends, perhaps unsuccessfully, to make your Hump day a bit less humpy. We’ve found restaurants that are (mostly) cheap, rarely visited by our Georgetown amigos and, above all, pretty freaking good to get you through the week.

Few culinary experiences can stimulate as much excitement as those enjoyed at our very own Leo’s. Some nights that begin with the highly anticipated dinging of the omelet bell, however, end in a deeply unsatisfying cheese-to-egg ratio, or, more horrifyingly, a lack of cheese altogether. After having despondently consumed a block of egg sprinkled with the occasional diced pepper or two, we can’t help but wonder what happened to the tomato and feta that we blatantly checked off on the omelet slip. Doesn’t writing “Thank You!!!” surrounded by hearts count for anything these days?

If you find yourself feeling like your aggressive politeness, excessive heart drawings and subtle winks at the gentleman with the frying pan have gone egregiously unnoticed one too many times, fear not. This week’s Hump Day Chomp hopes to take you off campus and into a venue where you can have your omelet and eat it too – and it will have tomato and feta if you ask for it.

The Diner in Adam’s Morgan is the perfect spot for weekend brunch. Situated on the neighborhood’s main strip along 18th Street, the restaurant is a quick walk from the bus stops that transport to and from Dupont. The Diner boasts a cozy, Sunday morning ambiance, with countertop seating and classic ketchup bottles, diner coffee mugs and bottles of syrup set at wooden tables. The one drawback is that you will inevitably face the age-old, paralyzing debate over whether to go with breakfast, brunch or lunch. The menu has everything from Western omelets to bread pudding French toast, from steak and eggs to chili cheeseburgers, and BLTs to grilled salmon. Not to mention, there’s a whole section of “Eye Openers” featuring mimosas, Bloody Marys and “adult spiked milkshakes.”

Screen Shot 2014-11-12 at 6.23.36 PM

If you’re looking to explore a new slice of the District with friends over breakfast or lunch, head to The Diner and check out the other restaurants and shops along the main drag in Adams Morgan. Tryst, a cute coffeehouse and cafe and The Diner’s sister restaurant, is located just a few doors down (featuring Instagrammable latté art). Unless, you know, you’re really into the always unpredictable game of Russian Roulette that is the omelet-making process at Leo’s (which one will be denied cheese in this batch?).

Here’s hoping you use this hump day as an excuse to treat yourself. You are better than a feta-less omelet.

Hump Day Chomp: Local 16

humpdaychomp

Hump Day Chomp is a new weekly posting that intends, perhaps unsuccessfully, to make your Hump day a bit less humpy. We’ve found restaurants that are (mostly) cheap, rarely visited by our Georgetown amigos and, above all, pretty freaking good to get you through the week.

To get you over this week’s hump, 4E is giving you some weekend plans worthy of day-dreaming about in Lau: A trip to our latest cheap restaurant pick, Local 16.

Although Local 16 describes itself on its website as serving, “the seasonal best from local growers with emphasis on organic meats and sustainable agriculture,” being the savvy, stressed-out Hoyas we are, we know the real reason to go there is the $23 Bottomless Brunch.

Dark and full of velvet, Local 16 appears to be a classic restaurant and bar upon entry, but if you go upstairs, you’ll find an open rooftop deck with lots of sunshine, foliage and a great view of D.C. — the perfect ambiance for an easy, breezy brunch.

Screen Shot 2014-10-28 at 11.38.40 PM

Bottomless Brunch ends after two hours at the table, so we recommend that you know your order before you get there -—you have more important things to do, such as consuming as many Bellini’s/Mimosas/Bloody Marys* as you can get your hands on.

Game-of-Thrones-drink

Note: Plan to spend at least five minutes of your precious aggressive drinking time freaking out over the fact that the mimosas are served in giant Mason Jars.

Local 16 offers all your brunch staples, so there’s sure to be something for everyone.  I myself am a classic eggs, bacon and rye toast girl, but I was seriously tempted by the cheeseburger with home fries and the breakfast and chorizo pizza (featuring a fried egg in the middle).  If you’re already full from your mimosas, they also have granola and yogurt or an awesome grilled vegetable sandwich.

slide_312842_2803666_free

So as you sit in your sad cube in Lau, miserably contemplating the large collection of dried gum under that little shelf, take a minute to get together some friends for a reservation at Local 16. After all, there’s no better Hump Day motivation than the wise words of Blair Waldorf: “Have a little faith, and if that doesn’t work, have a lot of mimosas.”

slide_312842_2799223_free

Local 16
1602 U Street NW (To get to U Street, take the Metro to the U Street-Cardozo Station on the Green Line. Or Uber.)
(202) 265-2828

Brunch:
Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

* For underage Hoyas, Local 16’s Bottomless Brunch offers juice, iced tea, or coffee instead.

Chadwicks Is Closing, and Mr. Smith’s Is Taking Its Place

chadwicks

After Mr. Smith’s announced its closure Monday, the bar today announced plans to move into the Chadwicks space on K Street.

Washington City Paper first reported Mr. Smith’s intentions to close by the end of the month, though the general manager said they were looking for another space in Georgetown. According to Eater DC, now it is Chadwicks that will close on Aug. 31, and Mr. Smith’s that will continue its run in Georgetown.

Luckily, Chadwicks, which has been open since 1967, still has its other location in Alexandria, Va. According to The Georgetown Metropolitan, Mr. Smith’s, which has been around since at least 1962, was forced from its original location on M Street by a rise in the building’s rent.

Obviously we at 4E are upset by this news as it means the end of cheap happy hours and bottomless champagne brunch on the weekends at Chadwicks. But, at the same time, we’re happy to see that a Georgetown institution — Mr. Smith’s — will live on.

Is Tuscany Reopening?

tuscany back

Ha. Good one. We wish. But now that you’re here, you might as well read up on the place that is now inhabiting the prime real estate Tuscany Cafe once held.

Nearly a year later, those of us who remember its glory still mourn the loss of Tuscany. Once hailed as a comforting haven for drunken Hoyas craving cheap pizza at 2 a.m., Tuscany quietly shut down in the summer of 2013. No one can really be sure of the reasons why it closed and never reopened, but one thing we can be certain of is that it is never coming back: A new owner has finally claimed the space that Tuscany left behind.

Lady Camellia is a pastry and tea shop that actually opened a few weeks ago, but only recently began serving tea. They offer an impressive array of baked goods, ranging from tea cakes to croissants to macarons. The decorations for the place are overwhelmingly pink and gold, reminiscent of what the Washington City Paper calls “a six-year old’s tea party fantasy.”

Do you remember when this was a place filled with ravenous students ordering pizza they weren’t ever going to remember eating?

With its prime location, Lady Camellia is poised to become the next hottest brunch spot. And with tea and scones? It doesn’t get much classier than that. So instead of heading down to 3261 Prospect at night for delicious, savory, unhealthy pizza, you now have the option of heading there in the morning and enjoying an extravagant brunch. You can always get your obligatory drunken pizza at the food truck.

5 Reasons Georgetown Students Are Frank Underwood

Frank Underwood 1It’s been two weeks since the second season premiere of “House of Cards” and Hoyas all around campus are finally starting to leave their dorm rooms (read: dark caves) and rejoin society. Since the premiere, it’s been hard to walk around campus without hearing, “Ugh, you’re only on episode 4? I skipped class and now I’m on episode 10.” While conversations of binge-watching and plot twists have filled Leo’s and Lau, there has been one topic that hasn’t been given much attention. After watching Season 2, it has become clear to me that Georgetown students are really Frank Underwood. Here’s how I can tell:

1. You and many of your friends have worked on Capitol Hill. From serving your local Congressman to interning for one of D.C.’s many NGOs, you know the Hill like the back of your hand. If it weren’t for the work you do, would the government be able to function? I don’t think so.

2. You do what it takes to get the job done. For Frank Underwood, that means doing a few questionable acts (cue horrible flashbacks to Season 2, Episode 1), but for you it means watching the sunrise in Regents after you just finished studying for one of your many midterms.

frank

3. The D.C. food scene is a subject that you know WAY too well. A huge part of Season 2 focuses on the number one love in Frank’s life: power Freddy’s. There’s nothing Frank Underwood likes more than having lunch at his favorite underground rib joint. And there’s nothing you like more than finding the new cool place for brunch or that hole-in-the-wall restaurant that no one else knows about.

Freddy's

4. You know how to get to the top of your on-campus commitments. It’s well known that Georgetown students are quite involved and pride themselves on their extracurriculars. Whether on a club sports team or in one of Georgetown’s many student activities, you do what you can to ensure future leadership positions. Just as Frank Underwood is gunning to become the president, you’re working hard to add that coveted leadership position to your resume.

5. Throughout the first two seasons, Frank Underwood often refers to Dupont when talking about where characters live or where he goes to get a drink. That’s basically Georgetown, am I right? Plus, you get your haircut in Dupont or you head there on the weekends to live it up with the yo-pros (‘young professionals’ for the abbreviationally challenged). You might have even run into Frank Underwood and not even known it!

Let’s just call it like it is: You are Frank Underwood. From your stunning work ethic to your knowledge of all things D.C., you may as well be on “House of Cards.” And if you can’t be on the show, you might as well just binge watch it like the rest of us. Seriously, if you haven’t started yet, get on it.

Brunch 2.0: The Revolution is Here

1905We talk and dream about brunch all the time on 4E, but today there is a new twist to the classic tale. Brinner, eating brunch at dinner (copyright: me), is now the hottest new option in Washington (once again, according to me).

According to DCist, the restaurant 1905 (down on 9th Street) is offering all the foods we love to eat at brunch … at dinner.

What? How? When? Is that even possible?

Why yes, yes it is! At 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, the trendy restaurant will break out its eggs and bacon for all to enjoy.

tumblr_mgzprdh87Z1rjrmzvo1_500

While they will still continue to offer their classic dinner menu, you can now also take advantage of chicken and waffles. Yum.

1905 will also offer bottomless mimosas and Bloody Marys for those readers who are 21 and over. So, basically, they are offering people the chance to pretend it is the weekend and have a really, really, really good time.

Check out the menu and go wild.  And remember: Brunch all day, every day. All the time.
