MARCH MADNESS: The Final Four

FINAL FOUR fi

After two weeks of voting, we’ve finally made it to the Final Four in The Fourth Edition’s March Madness bracket: The Best of Georgetown!

To catch up on the arguments for every round, click here.

HOT CHICK

Screen Shot 2013-04-01 at 3.24.36 AM

Emerging victorious from the Wisey’s Sandwich region was the third-seeded Hot Chick, who defeated Burger Madness in the first round and then bested the first seed Chicken Madness to clinch the region. Its combination of chicken fingers, cayenne ranch dressing, pepper jack cheese and tomatoes is a force to be reckoned with. A Hot Chick is only a couple of blocks away from our hallowed front gates and brightens the days of many students when the task of waiting 20 minutes in the Leo’s wok line is just too daunting. But is it the best part about Georgetown?

———————–

THE TOMBS

Screen Shot 2013-04-01 at 3.27.26 AM

The Tombs predictably destroyed Mr. Smith and Rhino in the first and second rounds, respectively. The delicious spinach and artichoke dip, proximity to campus, and tradition surrounding this Georgetown bar make it a strong contender for the win. Every Hoya needs to have their forehead stamped on his or her 21st birthday, and every under-21 Hoya longs for that day to come. Do you think all the hype is worth it?

———————–

BILL CLINTON

Screen Shot 2013-04-01 at 3.28.47 AM

Bill Clinton pulled out the win against Zoey Bartlet and then crushed Patrick Ewing, who was the  Cinderella story of this bracket. President Clinton brings much prestige to the Georgetown name, which was demonstrated earlier this year when the lovely Hillary came to speak in Gaston. It’s hard to pit a person against a sandwich, a bar and an event, but do you think Bill can hold his own?

———————–

GEORGETOWN DAY

Screen Shot 2013-04-01 at 3.30.43 AM

Georgetown Day faced no problems in the Georgetown Traditions region, demolishing Swimming in Dahlgren Fountain and holding a more special place in the hearts of Hoyas than Running to the White House. Georgetown Day is a light for many Hoyas that shines at the end of the tunnel of a difficult school year. A day full of fun and libations right on campus is hard to compete with, but, then again, I’m a freshman who has yet to experience this firsthand. I’m sure there are just as many unpleasant memories associated with this day as there are positive ones, but can they really outweigh the Georgetown-iness of Georgetown Day?

MARCH MADNESS: Wisey’s Sandwiches Round 2

See full bracket and results here

Chicken-Madness-Hot-Chick

Results from the First Round of the Wisey’s Sandwich Region are in, and it appears our fellow Hoyas have an affinity for chicken, as the Hot Chick and the Chicken Madness advanced to Round Two.  The #1 Seed Chicken Madness outlasted the Gangsta Wrap as expected, while the Hot Chick (much to my excitement) pulled through with the upset over Burger Madness.  So now it’s down to two.  Which fantastic, heavenly, wild, chicken-based creation will come out of this death match to represent the Wisey’s Region in the final four? That’s up to you.

I should remind you that this is officially the second time in one semester that Chicken Madness and Hot Chick have gone head to head… Maybe this time the results will be different.

The Chicken Madness is certainly a One Seed for obvious reasons, combining the deliciousness of grilled chicken and mayo with the sizzle of bacon…2321551065-184x300

But Colonel Sanders (and the Leo’s chefs) would approve of the fried chicken fingers on the Hot Chick

200px-Harland_Sanders-1

Plus, the Hot Chick has cayenne for a little extra kick

GrandmaCayenne

Picking against the Chicken Madness seems like.. well.. madness

35lpa9

Yet if any 3 seed has a shot at a cinderella story, I think it’s this Hot Chick (see what I did there?)

Unknown

While the Chicken Madness took care of business as a one seed, I think (and hope) that the Hot Chick has the potential to make this the upset of the bracket.  It’s not up to me, though.  Which sandwich reigns supreme in the hearts of Hoyas alike? Vote here, and check back in for the results.

March Madness: Georgetown Bars Round 2

So the top seeds in the Georgetown Bar region made it to the Elite Eight, but which one will get to the Final Four?

Rhino or The Tombs?

Rhino isn’t too far from campus, but, after a long night of party hopping, you may not want to trek all the way to M street.

rhino bar picture

But M Street also means food. Johnny Rockets, Tuscany, Quick Pita. And, at a certain point in the night, that’s all that really matters.

johnny-rockets

However, The Tombs is literally steps off of campus. You can even spend your night in Lau and then pop over for a drink.

the tombs

Then again, our basketball team has often been spotted at Rhino, especially after a big win.     Who can turn down an opportunity to dance with the stars of the school?

basketball team

Rhino is more of a weekend bar, but The Tombs is known for their weekly theme nights like Country Night every Monday and Trivia Night every Tuesday.

bull-riding

Personally, The Tombs is a Georgetown staple, as we showed in the Round 1 argument, but can Rhino pull out a win? Anything is possible in March as we’ve seen. (Editor’s Note: clearly this is true. The West region of my bracket is in shambles)

MARCH MADNESS: Georgetown Traditions Round 2

See full bracket and results heregeorgetown day running to the white house

Emerging victorious from last weeks matchups, two of Georgetown’s most hallowed traditions will face off for a chance to progress to the Final Four. Who will win the glory and honor that accompanies the title “Georgetown’s Favorite Tradition”? Who will fade from Hoyas collective memory as a second-tier ritual? It is up to you, voters, to decide the result of this contest, so for your consideration we present the Round Two Pregame Report:

Imagine yourself in 30 years. As you gather your children and tell them stories of your glory days, are you really going to tell Junior about the time you were so drunk at 11 am you fell asleep on Wisey’s curb?

wiseys

Hmm…much better to inspire your offspring with tales of a patriotic run to the White House, of being present for history in the making, or of having your screaming face on CNN for 2 seconds.

White-House-Party

Although the White House Run requires actual physical fitness…

Usain Bolt

…the quick 3 mile jog pales in comparison to the marathon of day drinking that is Georgetown Day.

daydrinking Running to the White House has obvious Instagram-able benefits: you get to look patriotic and show off to high school friends who decided to go to school in Iowa instead of DC at the same time.

white-house

But Georgetown Day comes in strong for profile pic potential with a dress code of sleeveless shirts (suns out guns out), neon colors (make the most of your late-spring tan) and cheap sunglasses that scream “I like to drink alcohol whilst having fun with friends and also I might be in a frat.”

sunglasses

Both traditions require dedication, perseverance, and herculean feats of endurance, all of which are well repaid in priceless memories and golden photos to document them (or supplement the blurry parts. we’re not judging.) Its hard to imagine a Georgetown Day upset, but then again, I hadn’t even heard of the wart on the face of higher education that is FGCU two weeks ago.

MARCH MADNESS: Notable Alumni Round 2

See full bracket and results herePatrick Ewing Bill Clinton

Results for Notable Alumni Round 1 are in: Patrick Ewing bested the top seeded Bradley Cooper by only 11 votes, and Bill Clinton showed who’s really in charge by destroying Zoey Bartlet (much to the chagrin of our managing editor). Georgetown has spoken; we like basketball and presidents. Simple as that.

Now two alumni compete to make the Final Four. It’s Patrick Ewing vs. Bill Clinton.

I think we’d all agree that Ewing has aged pretty well

Patrick+Ewing+Year+New+York+Minute+Photo+Exhibition+0mSj0LIsTdPl

But let’s not forget about Bill Clinton, who ages like a fine bottle of wine.

89445afb1400f61a445a3b198bb3f937

His DNC speech was a little drawn out, but few people can captivate so many people for so long…

BillClinton2012DNCSpeech640

Then again, Ewing is one of those people. He kept audiences captivated his entire career for entire games.

ewing

Speaking of careers, Bill Clinton was the freaking President of the United States: something kids and adults alike aspire to be.

Clinton & The Presidential Seal

But then again Patrick Ewing was a killer pro-basketball player: something kids actually want to do.

ewing-1986-rookie

As a pro-athlete, I’d say it’s safe to assume that Ewing got a lot of the ladies

patrick-ewing-girlfriend-cheryl-weaver1

But having taken AP US History, I’m pretty sure Bill Clinton did too…

MARCH MADNESS: Wisey’s Sandwiches Round 1

See full bracket and results here

Chicken Madness Gangsta Wrap

Welcome to the third installment of 4E’s March Madness. Let’s get right down to business. Whether it’s a sunny, spring March day or a blustery winter evening, one thing iscertain: Wisey’s is delicious. Today’s March Madness contenders are the best of the best on the Wisemiller’s Grocery and Deli menu. Which sandwiches will rise to the top of their mouth-watering bracket? Which will fall short? Let’s find out. Our first matchup for Wisey’s Sandwiches: Chicken Madness vs. Gangsta Wrap.

(Scroll down to see the second matchup)

It might seem impossible to take down Chicken Madness, the mother of all Wisey’s creations…

2321551065

…but Gangsta Wrap, with its turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato and parmesan pepper dressing just might be up for the challenge.

Chicken-Madness-Gangsta-Wrap

Or maybe not. How can you say no to this? So good, it’s “madness.” See what I did there?

1951Hatter But how can you say no to something so “Gangsta”? (Note: In no way does Tate Tucker officially endorse “Gangsta” Wrap, but he does make some pretty amazing “gangsta’ rap” … I immediately regret using that term but WISEY’S MADE ME DO IT.)

Screen-shot-2011-07-24-at-9.41.10-PM

Then again… how can you say no to these ingredients?

Chicken Madness: Slices of chicken grilled hot and sweet peppers, onions, cheese, bacon and mayo. Hear the Hallelujah chorus yet?

When it comes to Wisey’s, Chicken Madness is and will forever remain a beacon of culinary design and a Georgetown staple, making it an obvious frontrunner in this bracket. Can the Gangsta Wrap achieve an massive upset? Who will continue on to March Madness glory (and into my belly)? ONLY YOU CAN DECIDE! Vote here:

Burger Madness Hot Chick

Onto the next one! This round looks to be a close one, folks. Part two of our Wisey’s Sandwiches Showdown: Burger Madness vs. Hot Chick.

Our number two pick is the not-so-ugly step-sister of Chicken Madness: Burger Madness. Same madness, more beef, more mayhem.

l

But Hot Chick is looking to spice things up … with cayenne pepper and parmesan pepper dressing. Bam. Game changer?

cayenne_pepper

However, Burger Madness coincides with March Madness. (Here’s a bracket in case you need one.)

Then again, there’s always the Burger Madness’ sweet, savory goodness.

BURGERMDDNES-LOGO

Who will be the winner of Part 2? Will it be the beefy Burger Madness or the spicy Hot Chick? Who will make it on to the next round? Why am I salivating so much? IT’S UP TO YOU! (Except the salivating part. That’s not up to you; that’s just because Wisey’s is delicious.)

Casual Thursdays: (March) MADNESS!

march madness casual thursdays

It’s that time.  You can’t avoid it.  March Madness is finally upon us, and while maybe non-basketball fans will have to eat dinner by themselves simply to avoid bracket-talk, I absolutely love this time of year.  Dicky V, Sir Charles Barkley, and the rest of the college basketball announcers will be up to their usual shenanigans, throwing around words that probably aren’t english (Vitale) or television appropriate (Barkley).  The intensity level is up, and the stars of the college basketball world are all out to try and lead their teams to eternal glory. What better event than the goliath of all college sports to drink for, right?

Lost in all of the glory and excitement of that last paragraph, of course, is our upcoming holiday weekend.  To celebrate the beginning of Spring, we at 4E bring you a Casual Thursday-worthy Easter-themed drink.  Before we get to the Madness that is college basketball, here is a delightful cocktail to enjoy while relaxing.

March Madness Drink-along

And now we get a little crazy.  Obviously, any sporting event can be reason to drink, and you can feel free to improvise and adjust the reasons to imbibe while enjoying the craziness.  Here are some suggestions:

Take a sip if…

  • The higher seed wins the game
  • There is a Buffalo Wild Wings commercial
  • A player’s “athleticism” or “basketball IQ” is mentioned

Take a big swig if…

  • The lower seed wins
  • A player slaps the floor on defense
  • You see a tweet about some “spectacular” play
  • Dick Vitale gets really excited (or any of the announcers, I guess)
  • An announcer discusses the importance of a coach to the game

Take a shot if…

  • The game goes into overtime (you will probably need it)
  • Someone gets a technical (if you aren’t a sports fan, you can ask around for when this happens)

Finish your drink/chug if…

  • Dicky V gets this excited. Or starts making up words. Or both.
  • Charles Barkley says something offensive. Or starts making up words (he probably will)
  • Someone hits a buzzer-beater
  • Something this entertaining happens

The Easter Bunny:

  • 1 1/2 ounces dark creme de cacao
  • 1/2 ounce vodka
  • 1 tsp. of chocolate syrup
  • 1 tsp. of cherry brandy

1. Pour the creme de cacao and vodka into a cocktail shaker (improvise) with ice

2. Shake well

3. Strain into a glass with ice

4. Float chocolate syrup and cherry brandy on top

Enjoy the madness everybody, but please try to do it responsibly. Go Hoyas!

Georgetown Day Swimming in Dahlgren Fountain

Welcome to the second installment of 4E’s March Madness: The Best of Georgetown. Our first matchup for Georgetown Traditions: Georgetown Day vs. Swimming in Dahlgren Fountain. (Scroll down to see the second matchup)

It may seem hard to top Georgetown Day, with its promises of day drinking and bouncy castles…

Screen Shot 2013-03-18 at 1.40.33 AM

… but Georgetown Day comes but once a year. Dahlgren Fountain is there for you the whole year through.

Georgetown Day earns the culinary advantage, with kegs and eggs, mimosas, pancakes, waffles — anything your heart stomach could imagine.

And the only thing as refreshing as André and Tropicana on a warm day is a dip into the cool water of Dahlgren Fountain.

jack_dahlgrenfountain

Both contenders offer a hint of danger – which is what makes them exciting, right?

But also, did I mention the bouncy castles?

Georgetown Day has become somewhat sacred over its decade of existence. Its legendary status makes it the obvious top seed in this contest. But the administration’s efforts to squash everyone’s fun by adding barricades and checking bags has made it vulnerable to competitors. Dahlgren Fountain is the underdog here, but that’s not to say we can’t expect a Cinderella story. So who moves on to the next round? It’s up to you, VOTE HERE:

white house john carrolls lap

Onto the next ones! Here’s the second part of our Georgetown Traditions showdown: Running to the White House vs. Sitting in John Carroll’s Lap

The White House, home to every American President since John Adams, is conveniently located at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., just a short jog away from our own campus.

The statue of John Carroll, Georgetown’s founder, is even more conveniently located in the center of Healy Circle.

Georgetown students have been known to run to the White House to celebrate all sorts of events, from reaching the Final Four in the NCAA tournament to President Obama’s re-election to Osama Bin Laden’s death.

And it’s not uncommon on any given night to see someone clambering into Johnny C’s lap

JC Lap

According to campus legend, the tunnels under Healy Hall lead all the way to the White House. Good to know in case of snowstorms during a run to the big house!

There’s also a rumor that all those books under JC’s chair are hiding a toilet that some pranksters stuck under there back in the 60’s. Just something to chuckle to yourself about next time you climb up there.

Screen Shot 2013-03-18 at 2.05.08 AM

So which one will it be: Would you rather cause a ruckus outside the president’s house or spend some quality time with the founder of our school? THE CHOICE IS YOURS!

Let’s look at the numbers, shall we?

Bradley Cooper has been nominated for an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, three People Choice Awards, three Teen Choice Awards, five MTV Movie Awards and two Screen Actor’s Guild Awards.

Patrick Ewing was NBA Rookie of the Year (1986), All-NBA First Team (’90), All-NBA Second Team (’88, ’89, ’91, ’92, ’93, ’97); 11-time All-Star; named one of 50 greatest players in NBA history (’96); and a two-time Olympic gold medalist (’84, ’92).

In the end, the seeding came down to the incredible amount of attention Bradley Cooper has received by the readers of this blog and the deplorable lack of sports knowledge by a vast number of people at this school. Who will win? VOTE HERE:

MARCH MADNESS: The Best of Georgetown

CLOSED: We have a winner! GEORGETOWN DAY!

Ah March: the beginning of Spring, the excitement of two separate vacations, the unpredictable weather, and, of course, MARCH MADNESS.

To celebrate March, 4E has decided to have a little March Madness bracket of our own! We took some of the best parts about living on The Hilltop and being a Hoya and formed “The Best of Georgetown” bracket: full of controversial match-ups and age-old debates.

Over the coming weeks, we here at The Fourth Edition will be posting the matchups and laying out our arguments for and against each contender. That is, however, where our role ends. The results of each matchup will be determined by YOU, our faithful readers, in a poll at the bottom of each round.

So who’s ready to see the bracket? You are. So here we go. The regions will be Wisey’s Sandwiches, Georgetown Bars (West Georgetown only, sorry Adams Morgan), Notable Alumni, and Georgetown Traditions.
