Amy Schumer Acts After A Hoya’s Open Letter

50742-show-93986Yes, it is possible to love Amy Schumer even more than you already do.

She is remarkable not only for her unapologetic boldness, humor, confidence and ownership of her sexuality in Hollywood, but for using the voice that she has made for herself for a serious and urgent purpose — to combat gun violence in America. Her commitment follows an  open letter written by Sarah Clements (COL ’18).

“Amy Schumer, I and many other Millennials look up to you so much. You are our generation’s epitome of what it means to be a strong, powerful, self-aware champion for the experiences and truths of being a woman and an American today. I admire your unapologetic, unwavering stature and your ability to laugh at yourself while actually pinning the joke on the audience to address often uncomfortable truths.”

Clements, from Newtown, Conn., is a gun reform advocate whose mother is a survivor of the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting. Her July 31 letter, published on Medium, garnered national attention, including media coverage in major news outlets and an appearance by Clements on MSNBC. Schumer responded the next day.

Schumer and her cousin, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), have paired up to fight our country’s epidemic of mass shooting through the introduction of new legislation. Both the new effort and the open letter were referenced in Schumer’s Aug. 3 appearance on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” making it the second time a Hoya’s work on gun control has made its way to Comedy Central.

giphy-2We love you Amy Schumer and we admire you, Sarah Clements.

Georgetown for Gender Equality

giphy

BREAKING NEWS:

What do Twitter, Vodaphone and Georgetown all have in common?!
giphy-4

Yeah, buddy at first we were stumped too, but it’s:

GENDER EQUALITY.

As part of Emma Watson’s…

giphy-5

Well yes, her. But, really more her:

giphy

Anyway… As part of Emma Watson’s He for She campaign, major companies and universities have committed to joining in and taking concrete steps toward gender equality as part of the UNWomen’s IMPACT 10x10x10 initiative. We here at 4E are glad to hear it!

In fact, if you see John DeGioia around campus we urge you to give him a huge shout out for his pledge to advance gender equality through “the research compiled by Georgetown’s Institute for Women, Peace & Security, which will soon unveil a new study on women’s political participation in ending conflict” as well as “implemented a new on-campus education program to help students and faculty identify harassment and sexual misconduct”, and for the overall mention in TIME!

Check out the complete article here!!

And, a last HOORAY!

Life in India: The Auto

india-fellowship-brochure-image

For those of you who are unfamiliar with transport in India, actually for anyone, familiar or not with the concept of the auto, please let me share with you my latest fascination.giphy

In fact, I am writing the post fresh from an auto ride. I think it may have been the closest to death I have ever been in my life and I promise you I laughed so hard I cried (subconsciously this could have been out of sheer exhaustion or terror, but we’ll go with the comical experience I chose to interpret it as).

It is 9:30pm and dark out here in Bangalore, and we were on our way back from a pub (so maybe a combination of tipsy as well). We had a bit of a hard time getting an auto driver to agree to take us to where we are staying, let alone do so for a fair price. We ended up settling on a driver who agreed to take us to Johnson Market for 100 rupees (basically the equivalent of $1.50 USD, but we were gypped nonetheless as the trek was really only worth 75 — but that’s not the point). Oh, and he was permanently cross eyed (I promise this adds important context).

Now, before I get too detailed let me explain the concept of the auto as best I can. Also known as a tuk tuk or rickshaw, an auto is basically the Indian equivalent of a taxi, at least purpose-wise. It has 3 wheels. Here they are often yellow and green. No doors, and a bench that fits up to two or three people — or sometimes even entire families — in the back. Three of us tend to fit into one very snuggly, however. They run on a meter, but more often than not (especially since we’re foreigners) they ask for double to triple what the meter would cost. Sometimes the moment we tell them where you want to go they speed away and we have to try upwards of 3 to 4 more to get one to let us in. They are our main mode of getting around this city and have, without fail, provided us with new experiences each day.

Microsoft Word - Document1

I will not be able to describe the most recent ride with justice. Imagine if you were living out a video game in real time. A roofed four wheeler weaving through the busy city streets at night going far beyond an acceptable speed, and you the helpless passenger left to cringe (or in my case laugh hysterically) in the back. If this is still seeming like a “had to be there moment”, let me at least share with you a stream of thoughts that will hopefully help you get the picture:

  • So this is what it’s like to play chicken…
  • That’s 3 rounds of chicken in a row that we have won. (For those of you who may be unfamiliar, chicken is when two cars speed toward each other head on to see who will be there first (or last) to avoid hitting the other).
  • I wonder how fast we’re going.
  • Looks around the interior for the mandatory displayed registration: Nope, no license. This is safe.
  • I wonder how impossible it would be to tuck and roll into all this chaotic traffic?
  • These breaks are absolutely amazing!
  • I can’t believe we didn’t just hit that person, that family, that cow…giphy-1
  • At least I get the ATV experience while living in the city.
  • I can’t believe we didn’t rear-end that person… What, is that a mere 6 millimeters to spare?
  • The U-turning abilities on this thing are unreal.
  • Seriously sir, you’ve asked 5 people hoe to get to our location, please just let us get out and start over.
  • No English at all?
  • How on earth are we still alive?
  • How on earth have we not witnessed an accident? Perhaps the U.S. should switch up their traffic patterns: purge-style seems to be quite efficient.
  • When crossing the street: Hit me, you won’t.

This is my stream of conscious everyday, multiple times a day. Here’s to making it a full week without being hit by a car, only 9 to go!

The Scoop: GUPD Catches Suspect & Uses Instagram

paul_blart_mall_copHi Hoyas! With all of this ~criminal activity~ on campus lately, 4E wants to do their part to keep fellow Hoyas and members of our community as safe as can be with a PSA: GUPD has an Instagram account!!!

As you may have seen, at approximately 7:42 p.m. last Friday, our very own chief of police, Jay Gruber, notified us that the suspect in an armed robbery that occurred on campus Wednesday night had been identified and arrested in the Leavey Center. With the help of a student report, they were able to pull this off. But, with the help of Instagram, they were able to notify students much earlier!

Screen Shot 2015-05-12 at 3.43.17 PM

(Evidence: This screenshot was taken at least 2 hours before any official notice was reported to students.)

Now as weird and perhaps even sketchy? as all of this was, we here at 4E would like to commend GUPD for reaching students where they are: Instagram.

giphy

Side note: Students were also on campus during this time, so maybe there could be another small protocol way of telling us when armed criminals are roaming our buildings… just a thought.

Anyway, they’ll get there! Let’s keep showing GUPD our support with a little Insta-love.

IMG_5239

Their ratio right now is alright, but you know if this were your account you’d be telling yourself do better.

IMG_5241

They also post cool bike pics like this. Plus if @thegeorgetownchimes likes their stuff, shouldn’t you?

IMG_5240

Props to them on their charity work! Really impressive!!

Yet another side note: Still wondering if they have an update on my stolen bike from the first week of fall semester…

IMG_5251

Sometimes they even pose with students! Bucket list fall 2015: get in a @gu_pd Insta!

giphy-1

Anyway, GUPD keep doing you and doing safety, we really appreciate it! Students, be sure to follow this account. You don’t want any FOMO about, you know, actual real world safety issues right outside our doors!

10 Signs You’re Done with Finals

summers-If it’s not, it’s so soon… You’ve reached the final stretch of Spring 2015 and thoughts of the beach, home cooked meals and high school friends are starting to taunt you. In case it hasn’t hit you yet, here’s 10 signs that you are done!

1. You’ve kissed Lau goodbye.

giphy

2. Your dorm room/ apartment has turned into a maze of boxes that you’re not quite sure you’ll ever be able to escape.

3. You finally have the chance to relax on Healy beach.

61970359

4. That deep, dark anger looming over you for the past week has been replaced with a rejuvenating sense of liberation as you throw away a semester’s worth of notes and assignments.

5. Your nightmares of terms, formulas and literature have been replaced by dreams of the beach and long car rides with friends back home windows down country blaring.

giphy-1

6. The sunburn on your shoulders has arrived to remind you of the 4 months of freedom you’re about to enjoy.

7. You have a newly acquired love for Georgetown, the world and your parents as they approach campus to deal with all of your stuff and/or shoot you the text asking what groceries you’d like them to pick up.

8. You’ve been hit by the bittersweet realization that you’re a year closer to graduating, thus adulthood, thus retirement.

giphy-2

9. You’ve shed a tear saying goodbye to friends who will no longer be just next door for awhile.

giphy-3

10. It has crossed your mind that each meal you eat at Leo’s is one of your lasts for awhile.

CONGRATS HOYAS YOU MADE IT ANOTHER YEAR!

POG Study Guide

70918ee4ab004f5d6c4889f5a2c27114Greetings fellow freshmen and a happy finals season to all! Guess what’s coming up?! The POG Final!

yes-man1

(Disclaimer: that’s pronounced pog, like dog, frog, log, jog, clog, bog and smog.)

Given our glamorous location at the oldest Catholic School in the country, I figure most of us are pretty well versed in religion so I will try not to be too condescending.

Also, given that the POG final’s official exam date is not until May 9th and the various commendable Problem of God professors have chosen their own respective design styles, we have considered only the larger umbrella points that will be helpful to all, POG students and muggles included, to navigate the universe within(?) them. To help us all prepare for not only this glorious final, but for the rest of our lives, 4E has come up with some questions and terms to ponder:

  1. What is the meaning of life?

Is it “I just want to be successful” by Drake and Trey Songz????

…Or is it “Seasons of Love” from Rent?

2. Evolution: Let us provide you with a few examples:

celebrity_transformations_josh-peck

Josh!!! What happened?

n-neville-longbottom--large-msg-1334623995

Anyone remember Neville Longbottom?

miley-cyrus-before-and-after

Hannah Montana; Miley?

3. Creationism– Here’s how it’s done:

4. Who is God?

Is it Ryan?

giphy-3

Our very own Bradley?

giphy-2

NOPE… It’s Morgan Freeman.

giphy-4

Alas, 5. What is God?

Well, we suppose this one’s up for you to decide.

Leo’s: The Mysterious & Majestic

IMG_0250-1024x7644E has a lot to say about everyone’s favorite dining hall on campus, but first let us say: CONGRATS!

We are seriously so happy and excited for the joint success of the Georgetown Solidarity Committee and the Leo’s-Aramark campaign with their win!!! The advocacy and rallying done by students and workers on this campus have yielded extraordinary efforts:

  1. An increase in minimum wage for Aramark workers by $2.00 over the next 4 years
  2. Broader health care coverage with lower premiums
  3. Greater protection for immigrant workers
  4. A sustainability committee to improve food quality, as well as paid training for all cooks
  5. Life insurance and a scholarship fund
  6. Guarantee of union representation and a fair bargaining process for all other Aramark employees

Finally, the hardworking friendly faces that are responsible for our survival each day (literally a freshman with a meal plan owes their life to Leo’s at this point right?!) will receive the benefits and compensation that their hard work deserves!

*Even those of you who may not be particularly keen with the options at O’Donovan’s by the Waterfront have to be grateful for the familiar friendly faces that serve us our vegan banana bread, chicken tenders and wok each day.

giphy-8

Now to the other purpose of this post……

Leo’s: the mysterious and the majestic.

As an avid Leo’s goer and Leo’s lover, I find myself full of questions about the magic that goes into creating such a deluxe college cafeteria environment. My personal favorite mystery is the playlists: Where do they come from? Is there a schedule? When is the best time to go to get a little throwback 2000’s R&B/hip hop going on? But best of all… how will I ever get my own music collection to live up to the glory of Leo’s?

It’s been rumored that it is the Leo’s workers themselves who pick the playlist. While I can neither confirm nor deny this, I will commend it. It’s just always so on point.

giphy-14

Jo-Jo, 3OH!3, Michael Jackson, 50 Cent, Walking in Memphis, Get Low… They seriously run the gamut from the all-time best sing alongs to the songs that bring you back to the days of driving to the grocery store with your mom as a little kid. It’s magical.

On another note, 4E has heard the speculative rumor that Leo’s is, in some discreet way, offering tours?! True or not, we have come up with a Leo’s bucket list of our own to explore the mystery…

1. The room out back downstairs where all of the basketball players eat: what goes on in there? We figure it probably involves crowns, worship, and caviar…?

2. Where does the food come from? Actually though, they’re serving thousands of us each day, how do they cook it all? Do they have a team of minions helping them out?

3. Where does Jack the Bulldog eat? Feeling like it wouldn’t be unsafe to assume he has his own kitchen and palace somewhere up in here.

4. The elevator outside in the back: where does it go?

giphy-7
Access to Hogwarts?!!?!
giphy-6
Narnia?!!??!!

5. What are the vegan chicken nuggets made out of? Because they’re seriously so good.

For now, that is all. Congrats again, Leo’s! I’m sure many of us will be seeing you soon.

SEE THE CHERRY BLOSSOMS…From Lau!

cherryblossomslau

How is the 3rd hour of your study session? Where is that study break you intended to take?

You’ve somehow found yourself trapped in the unforgiving walls of Lau 2, wondering if the room is really full of talkative people or if it’s all just a dream? You somehow have only been living within the confines of this book filled, fun sucking metropolis, for the past week and have missed out on all of the friendly tourist filled cherry blossom hype?!

Whatever your pity story, 4E has good news: you can see the cherry blossoms from Lau!

Here’s how:

1. Enter the building.
2. Flash your card at the security/student guard while complimenting them on their shirt choice (especially if it’s uniform).
3. Rather than go to Lau 2 head to the basement, not Lau 1, the basement.
4. Find a cubicle farthest away from all windows (if there even are windows down there).
5. Sit down.
6. Try and cover the top of the cubicle to block out all light.
7. Put on your weirdest playlist to set the mood for any of other Lau-basement-ers that might be in your company.
8. Once you’re in this position you’re in a great spot for cherry blossom viewing! Just click here and enjoy.

giphy-6

If this isn’t quite what you had in mind maybe you should check out: New Jersey… Is this home?! Or Dubai… check out this water park while in Lau! Or this panda down the street, this egg hatchery or spot cute couples lounging by the ocean (ahh awkward) in St Croix!

Too bad there isn’t a view of campus to offer up- you could creep on your friends and all things going on while you continue to sit there alone in that cubicle and procrastinate.

giphy-7

Happy Studying,

How to Make the Most of GAAP Weekend

GAAP

Dear joyous prospective students,

CONGRATS ON BEING ACCEPTED TO GEORGETOWN!

giphy-9

Your friends here at 4E would like to welcome you to to our home, the Hilltop, which we look forward to sharing with you next year! With the onset of the first GAAP weekend we know your mind must be bursting with questions, anxieties, fears, hopes and dreams. With your jumble of emotions in mind, we have decided to help.

One thing you can be sure to confront during your jam-packed GAAP weekend is a tour (perhaps your first ever) around the Georgetown Campus! We get the pressure, the desire to take it all in: aesthetically pleasing buildings, wandering randos, perhaps spotting a Jesuit or better yet Jack the Bulldog?! We don’t want you to miss a thing!

For this reason we have come up with a list of questions to ask your GAAP tour guide:

  1. Ask them what they had for breakfast. This is important because it fills you in on their credibility. If the say nothing they are not to be trusted as they either are lying about the mound of tater tots they had at Leo’s or they are not responsible enough to replenish their body with essential nutrients during the most important meal of the day, but don’t judge them too hard.
  2. Ask what Jack the Bulldog had for breakfast. This too is key because it again will fill you in on just how honest they are being with you. Don’t accept any answer other than golden kibbles and bits. Insist.
  3. Ask them about their deepest darkest fears. A final way to test their credibility, here is a great way to dig deep and really build a connection with your guide right off the bat.
  4. Favorite meal/station/concoction at Leo’s. Here’s the time to get serious. Make sure to have your notebook and pen out because you will need to be documenting the hidden gems of Leo’s ASAP to make sure you get the most of those meal swipes.
  5. Ask for directions to Lau 6. Don’t tell anyone the answer. It is the biggest secret on campus.
  6. Best Class/Professor(s)? This might actually be really beneficial information.
  7. Ask for their favorite weirdest party theme. This one could be interesting given the periphery of parents that are likely to be surrounding. If their first answer seems to avoid the question ask for 2 runner ups.
  8. Ask them to connect the Jesuit values with different episodes of How I Met Your Mother. This may take some time and pose a bit of a challenge for your guide, but their answers will sure to be ripe with useful information about our culture and Jesuit identity here on campus.
  9. Then ask them if they are religious. Before they can answer say, “Because you’re the answer to all of my prayers.”
  10. Choose one of the following from the NYT’s list of questions that lead to love:
  • How close and warm is your family? Do you feel your childhood was happier than most other people’s?
  • Make three true “we” statements each. For instance, “We are both in this room feeling … “
  • For what in your life do you feel most grateful?

Note: This one should be super fun, especially if your guide is attractive. Save this for the near-end of your tour, gaze into their eyes, pretend as if it just you and this other person, rid your mind of the idea that your parents and future classmates are surrounding you.

But really though, WE LOVE GEORGETOWN AND HOPE YOU WILL TOO!

200 (Please disregard the inappropriate behavior of the Hoya in center.)

Sincerely,

(Some of your future favorite people on campus??)

Friday Fixat10ns: Songs to Fuel Your Run

runningfixations

As we near the end of March the weather is improving, the birds are chirping and the incessant crowd of DC runners are continuing to take on the sidewalks. If you are not already, 4E encourages you to get out and join the fun!

We understand, however, if the prospect of putting on athletic clothes and actually partaking in physical activity has you feeling like this:

giphy

It can be daunting, but no matter what long winded string of excuses you can make for yourself, WE BELIEVE IN YOU! And we have put together a playlist as a form of encouragement. In no time at all you’ll be like this:

giphy-1

  1. Uptown Funk- Bruno Mars, Mark Ronson. The ultimate pump up song to start of the run. If your pacing isn’t good, the beat in this song will surely help you get through the pain.
  2. I’m Still Standing- Elton John. Second song is where you really wanna give up, hey you’ve already ran a little why do more. This song will remind you that you are up and doing this. So, why stop?
  3. Lose Yourself- Eminem. Literally lose yourself as you listen to this song. Pretend you are on a beach, sleeping, just not running/dying like you probably are in reality.
  4. Dog Days are Over- Florence + the Machine. Almost half way there, you are past the hard part. Enjoy the serenity of this song and the serenity of this less painful part of this thing we call exercise.
  5. Talk Dirty- Jason Derulo. What makes a run better than picturing Jimmy Fallon doing his cover of this song? The original is amazing too, enjoy the hilarious lyrics and the obsessive beat.
  6. All I Do is Win- DJ Khaled. You are killin’ it. Really, all you do is win. You are making this run yours, there is no stopping. In the words of the poetic DJ Khaled all you do is win “no matter what”. Keep it up.
  7. Team- Lorde. We are all your team (aka your cheer squad) here. You have so much support behind you, keep on keeping up.
  8. Anaconda- Nicki Minaj. Nothing like a little Nicki to get you excited and in the mood to finish this run. You better do the rap or you are not a real person.
  9. I Love it- Icona Pop. You love this run, you love this exercise, you love that this thing is almost over! Celebrate with this iconic song and make sure to scream out the chorus while doing so.
  10. How Far We’ve Come- Matchbox Twenty. YOU DID IT. You have made it to the end of your run, congrats! Look at what you have done and all the songs that have helped you get there. Killin’ it.

There you have it, 10 songs that range the spectrums of genres and decades ready to accompany you on your workout. Get out there and show us what you got!!
