Manly Monday: Spring Break Edition

manlymondays

While the weather in DC wouldn’t be any indication, Spring Break is just a week away. One more week of classes and we can all retreat to warm paradises or our cozy homes. After a brutal few weeks of midterms and papers, a much-deserved break is finally on the horizon. The men at 4E are here to make sure our loyal manly men are all prepped for Spring Break.

Wardrobe

This winter in DC has been historically cold, so it has definitely been a while since anyone has had the ability to break out the shorts and T-shirts. A solid wardrobe is essential to a memorable spring break. You don’t want to be that guy wearing the generic Nike shirt and shorts combo.

Every manly man needs something memorable, their own personal schtick. Maybe your thing will be visors instead of traditional hats, short-shorts or an assortment of old jerseys. Either way, you need to find something unique and embrace it.

If you’re just looking to upgrade, Chubbies Shorts are always a classic favorite. Also, everyone appreciates a good Hawaiian shirt, so make sure to have at least one in your repertoire. Finally, don’t forget a swimsuit. Seems so obvious, but unique trunks can really pull together a Spring Break outfit.

Tunes

A quality and extensive Spring Break playlist is essential. You are finally back out in the sun and able to appreciate music that doesn’t make you long for the days of summer.

Spring break is a time for often-forgot-about “summer” songs to make their way back to your Spotify playlists. So break out that summer playlist that has been underutilized since the long-ago days of warmth.

Don’t have one? Don’t worry. 4E has you covered with a variety of summer and spring break themed playlists. Here is our latest Summer Throwbacks playlist that should definitely be utilized during your Spring Break.

Some country stars like Luke Bryan even have whole albums dedicated to Spring Break. So next time you need a study break, throw together a playlist for you and your boys to enjoy while getting a nice tan.

The Perfect Tan

That leads me to the next thing you need to prep for: getting that perfect bronze tan. Getting a quality tan is an artform. Burn too early, and you ruin your whole trip. Be too safe, you become one of those people that gets on a plane leaving Florida, Mexico, etc. still pasty white. It is a fine line you need to walk, but we are here to help.

First off, know your problem spots. For most people shoulders and nose are classic problem areas, so pay close attention to them. I recommend always putting a higher strength SPF on them. Obviously you are going to want to start out with stronger sunscreen, then work your way down.

After a long day in the sun, your best friend is going to be aloe. Even if you didn’t burn that day, it will help your skin recover for the next day.

Make sure to have an even tan. Nothing looks more bizarre than someone who laid on their back all day and their front is blatantly darker than their back.

Also, don’t wear sunglasses too often. A tan line from those is glaring and embarrassing. Moral of the story: be careful and don’t be embarrassed to ask a friend to help you reach those spots that you just cannot get to.

What to Do?

While the majority of Spring Break should be spent relaxing, obviously you are all there to have fun. An instant way to ruin fun is to end up bickering at each other about what to do. Make sure to have some things planned.

In Florida for the week? Catch a Spring Training baseball game which just got started. Maybe you can all each pick one thing to do on the trip to make sure everyone gets to do what they want and no one has to argue. However you choose to do it, go into the vacation with a bit of a plan, but remember that you are there to kick back and relax.

Staying Home?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with heading home for Spring Break. Maybe you are lucky enough to live in a classic Spring Break area, and your backyard is your vacation. If you are home, it is important that you still enjoy yourself and not sulk around that you aren’t somewhere else.

Home is often the main ingredient in a recipe for a relaxing and fulfilling break. Spend time with your family, eat your favorite meals, finish House of Cards, or whatever suits you. The fact that you had to go home should not mean you have a boring break. Sometimes your couch and family are better than thousands of other people crowded onto a small beach. Everyone misses their family, so cherish the time you have at home.

Spring Break will be a welcome break that everyone has been counting down towards since we came back from winter break. No matter where you are going, or with who, just make sure to kick back, relax, and enjoy the break. To all the loyal followers of Manly Mondays, have a man-tastic Spring Break.

Gather Around the Table: Georgetown Food Clubs

breakfastmain-copy

Few things bring people together quite like a good meal. Georgetown is a prime example of this. Leo’s is filled with groups of friends trying to enjoy whatever happens to be served up that day, or suffering together waiting in long lines.

However, recently more focused groups have risen on campus. We have always had GUGS, but now clubs like GUAC (Georgetown University Avocado Club) and Pi Zeta Alpha: The Pizza Fraternity are getting started. This has led to a simple question, what’s next?

Here are a few more food clubs that would suit Georgetown well:

Food Truck Chasers – One of the benefits of living in a city like D.C. is the interesting array of food trucks that are scattered around the city. Georgetown students’ only experience with food trucks shouldn’t be just the one that parks in Healy Circle on late night weekends. Many food trucks serve extremely good food, and there is such a variety that it is worth trying to experience as many of them as you can. A personal favorite is the Swizzler truck. Swizzler serves gourmet hot dogs, with a variety of toppings that will satisfy anyone’s taste. Swizzler is normally right outside the front gates on Fridays, so its a convenient, natural, and tasty place to start. Check them out on Twitter (@swizzlerfoods) for their complete schedule. If you like them, expand and try the other trucks D.C. has to offer. You can find things from tacos, to gyros, to pizza. Find something you like and chase them down because they are always on the move. The website “Food Truck Fiesta” has an active map of where the trucks are, and can be found here.

See-Food: The Seafood Club – Georgetown is located within close proximity to both the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean leading to a city that offers a variety of fresh seafood. Fresh seafood is hard to come by most places, and we should take advantage of the fact we have such quality seafood in our neighborhood. The best part of the seafood club is that you have so many options. One trip could be for a casual, cheap lunch at a place like Tackle Box which is right on M St. (unfortunately closed for renovations right now, but highly reccomend when it opens back up). A week later, the club could head over to the Washington Harbour and get all dressed up and get a nice seafood dinner at a place like Farmers Fishers Bakers. However, there are so many other great seafood options around D.C. that need to be explored.

Brunch Bunch – It seems that a nice Saturday morning brunch is a fan favorite here at Georgetown. There are a ton of places both in Georgetown and across D.C. that offer an exceptional brunch. Brunch prices are often very different depending on what the restaurant offers, but you will be always be able to find one that caters to your budget and wants. One spot close to campus with an especially tasty brunch is Fiola Mare. For $28, you get a choice of beverage, an appetizer, entree, and dessert. An extremely good deal that can be found down on the waterfront at 3050 K St. Many restaurants advertise their brunches on the chalkboard stand-up signs outside their front doors, so keep an eye out next time you are walking down Wisconsin or M, because you just may find something that catches your eye.

Fly With Us: Wings – Chicken wings are a personal favorite of mine, and rarely do you find someone who does not enjoy a good plate of wings. They go perfect with sporting events and good friends. Every restaurant has their own spin on wings, and especially the sauces. Often times it’s the sauces that really distinguish one wing from another. Many places offer what they claim to be the “hottest” wings, as well as many establishments offering deals like all you can eat wings for a flat price. This makes wings perfect for a club looking to try all the different takes on a classic staple. A place I recommend to begin with is First Down Sports Bar in nearby Ballston, Virginia. It is a short cab or metro ride away. They offer 40 flavors of sauce, as well as having 28 TVs in the restaurant, making it a perfect place to go watch a game with some friends. On Monday’s they offer 59 cent wings, and Wednesday’s it is all you can eat wings for $18. We’ve all tried Wingos, but there are so many other places around D.C. that offer great wings, so get a group together and go see who can handle the hottest wings.

Eating History – One of the coolest parts about being in D.C. is constantly being surrounded by history. We are within walking distance of the National Mall, White House and so many other historical landmarks. With that said, all the leaders of our nation had to eat somewhere, right? Get together, pick your favorite person in our nation’s history and find out where they liked to eat. Restaurants love to advertise their historical connections so it won’t be hard to find. An easy and classic place to start is Martin’s Tavern, right at the corner of Wisconsin and N. There JFK proposed to Jackie, and presidents ranging from Truman to George W. Bush have enjoyed a meal there. Places all across D.C. will offer you a great meal and a taste of history, so get a group together and try it out.

These are just a few ideas for potential future food clubs that would be successful here on campus. Although, they don’t need to be a school sanctioned club to be enjoyed. If you and your friends enjoy a similar taste in something, get off campus and try what D.C. has to offer to you. There is too much good food in this city that is going uneaten.

The Super Bowl for Dummies

Super Bowl for Dummies

The day everyone has been waiting for is finally here. Football fans and commercial die-hards alike get their fix on this nationally celebrated occasion. The Super Bowl has finally arrived, and we here at 4E want to make sure all of our fellow Hoyas are well prepared for the event. So, here is a guide to the who, where and what to eat of the Super Bowl.

Who’s Who

The 14-4 New England Patriots will battle the 14-4 Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night. The Patriots bring in a high-powered offense led by Tom Brady and slightly deflated footballs. The Seahawks will send out arguably the best defense in the NFL to try and slow down Brady. In charge of stopping Brady will be Richard Sherman and the rest of the Seattle secondary, otherwise known as the “Legion of Boom.” The Seahawks’ offense is led by quarterback Russell Wilson who is coming off a four interception performance in the NFC Championship and will need to bounce back. The workhouse of the Seattle offense is running back Marshawn “Beast Mode” Lynch. Beast Mode may not have a lot to say in his interviews, but his play on the field will absolutely need to speak for itself if the Seahawks want to have a chance against the Pats.

Patriots’ Key Players: QB Tom Brady, TE Rob Gronkowski, RB LeGarrette Blount, DT Vince Wilfork, Aaron Hernandez (while he may not actually be playing, the former Pats tight end’s trial for murder began this week – it’s absolutely something to keep an eye on)

Seahawks’ Key Players: RB Marshawn Lynch, QB Russell Wilson, CB Richard Sherman/Legion of Boom

With that said, look for one of the following players to steal the show on Sunday…

National Anthem: Idina Menzel, who sings “Let it Go” from Frozen will have the honor of singing the national anthem before kickoff. This is quite the honor for Menzel. That same stage has been host to legendary artists such as Whitney Houston, Carrie Underwood and Billy Joel, to name a few.

Halftime Show: For those of you not-so-huge football fans, the halftime show will be none other than California Girl Katy Perry. Perry says she has a whole brand new show planned for halftime, and will be joined by Lenny Kravitz and another secret special guest. Word on the street is Perry cut out Thin Mints to be in performance-ready shape come Sunday.

Where is it

The game itself will be played at the University of Phoenix Stadium which is ironically located in Glendale, Arizona. Kickoff is set for 6:30 pm and can be found on NBC. Super Bowl parties are always a good time and would be a great excuse to gather friends and not do homework on a Sunday.

However, if neither you nor your friends have cable, ample seating space or the necessary funds to host, don’t worry, our friends at Georgetown Program Board have you covered. They will be hosting a watch party in the Healey Family Student Center with free Wingo’s wings, Domino’s Pizza, DC Cupcakes and soda. Here is the link for the Facebook event, and if you do not have anywhere to head for the Super Bowl, I highly suggest turning this into your own personal Super Bowl Party and taking advantage of the opportunity. The event officially begins at 6:30, but the Program Board suggests coming early to make sure you get a good seat.

What do I eat?

The Super Bowl is just as much about food as it is about football. As I just said, the game watch in HFSC will have all the Super Bowl Sunday essentials. Throwing a party and not sure what to get for your guests? Easy, wings and pizza. Nothing says “Super Bowl” quite like wings and pizza. In fact, about 1.25 billion chicken wings are expected to be eaten during the game, which is just about four wings for every American. So give Wingo’s a call and order at least four wings for everyone at your party (I would probably suggest more than four a person, but that’s just me). 50 wings at Wingo’s will cost you $47.99 before delivery and tax. In addition, any good host needs to have a strong snack game. Most people will be glued to the game and cannot be bothered to get up, so a great spread of snacks is crucial. Things like chips and guac/salsa are classics, but don’t hesitate to get creative. Buffalo chicken dip is a personal favorite, but feel free to make your own snack choices for your own party.

This year’s Super Bowl will hopefully be a little more entertaining than last year’s blowout, but either way it is a great way to get friends together and enjoy each other’s company, or at least to just take a break from schoolwork for a few hours. So kick back, relax, enjoy the game and find out if the Seattle Seahawks can repeat, or if the golden boy Tom Brady will spoil their fun. Also, be sure to keep an eye out during the commercials, because sometimes they outshine the actual game. Happy Super Bowl Sunday Georgetown.

P.S. Maybe the Super Bowl is not your style. Well, The Puppy Bowl will be airing at 3 :00 pm on the Animal Planet and is exactly what you would hope for. It is a bunch of puppies running around with football toys. Enjoy.
